I’m not exactly sure how livestreams work here, but I may be doing non-pony art with my Picarto. If I link it here, do I only have to do pony-related stuff? Or could someone click on my livestream here on Derpibooru and then watch me doing non-pony art?

Theoretically speaking (not really), if an artist made a picture but borrowed a cutie mark design from another artist in order to make the picture, should the artist who made the cutie mark also be listed in the tags?

Sorry if this has already been brought up, but I kinda doubt I’ll find what I’m looking for if I sift through the forums.

@The Smiling Pony

We all make mistakes.

We’re all human after all.

But eh, I think I’ve had enough arguing for now. Call ‘em whatever you like, I guess.

I’m just gonna give em the benefit of the doubt and assume it was an accident.

I have 3 and opened up the Apple Family Reunion photo. Didn’t get any ponies. Not sure why.

Only other thing I can think of is maybe I was using derpiboo.ru instead of derpibooru.org?

@Siberian Pizza

While I do think that you will get more popularity if you draw the more popular canon ponies (especially any of the mane six or BG mane six), I think ultimately it’s up to the artist what to draw. Be creative. Experiment. I myself like to draw crossovers (not like cartuneslover-type crossovers) and the ponies doing fun(ny) stuff…I get a lot of my inspiration from fiction and even real life…it’s really whatever pops into my head and makes me go “heh, this would make for hilarious/great pony art!”

@norikago

Starting artist here, too. Yeah, my best advice is to look up pony guides on deviantart. They offer some good techniques that can help you get the style you want (esp. if you’re doing digital art like me). Also, use references like crazy, but don’t plagiarize. If you’re drawing Sweetie Belle, for instance, image search “Sweetie Belle”, and if you’re drawing her sitting, try “sweetie belle sitting”, and examine how other artists have drawn her, and adapt it to your tastes as necessary. :) I think there’s a group on deviantART for learning brony artists if you’re interested.

Hey fellow artists. (Newbie) artist here. I was wondering if you could help me with something.

At the moment, I only have two free drawing programs, GIMP and Inkscape. I’ve sort of gotten the hang of Inkscape, but I’ve barely even touched GIMP, TBH. And I want to know which program is best for which scenario.

  1. If I wanted to make a shaded drawing in the style of say, this: >>922297, which program would be better? And is it possible (but harder) to do it with the other program? (I realize that this particular drawing is rather advanced for my caliber, but I’d just like to know which one would be best for this style)

  2. What about a non-shaded cartoon like this? >>218321 (deleted) Again, is it possible to use both?

  3. I am in the process of making a comic series that is sort of in the style of the show, but a lot more simplistic. Which would be better for such a comic? (I would share a preview, but to me it looks like s**t, so I’m a little embarrassed.)

A comic where Bon Bon is holding a meeting with other background ponies. She asks who would like to make the speeches for <insert big event here>. Vinyl volunteers. Bon Bon promptly asks “Any other volunteers?”, leaving an annoyed Vinyl.

(sorta poking fun at the fact that she never talks)

Should spoilers related to works besides MLP, especially recently released works, be marked or tagged as such?

For example, if I want to do a ponified scene interpretation or parody from the movie Inside Out (which was just released last month), and it’s a spoilerific scene, should it be marked tagged ‘spoiler’ or something?

I have not read all the replies, but from what I’ve seen, pretty much any medium can get up votes. Heck, a creepy-looking balloon animal of discord got some, mostly I’m guessing because it was a rather creative medium. Generally, as long as you put effort into art, don’t have any crack shippings, avoid nonsensical crossovers and putting Sonic in your pics, and don’t mouthpiece you’ll get upvotes.

Of course, the community can be very fickle in what it likes (I saw two collages of characters from media taking selfies (including he one in rainbow rocks), one with several upvotes and one with a negative score, with no difference between them other than the pictures used). But hey, what can ya do about it?

I’m not sure what the general consensus is on OCs.

These are just my thoughts after a lot of pensiveness, but I’m starting to feel like it’s become harder and harder to put my finger on why we like G4. Please don’t take this as a rant or as me trying to start anything, this is a genuine question after much thought.

I know a lot of bronies defend the show, saying that G4 has better animation, has a less girly feel (I just saw a bit of G3 to compare, and those colors were awfully bright and vivid, even for me), and has excellent voice acting. I’m inclined to agree with a lot of these (for the most part).

But another thing I hear people talk about is the plots. I bring up this topic, mostly because today’s episode’s plot just feels very comparable to something from your typical “girly show” (i.e. decorating a place and arguing over how to decorate it). It’s a bit distant from the level conflict of other episodes…it almost feels like what Lauren was talking about when she said that characters in girls’ shows often “had endless tea parties, giggled over nothing, and defeated villains by either crying or sharing with them”. Now, I don’t mean to detract the episode, as it wasn’t all that bad. I’m just saying that the premise seems very…typically girly. Would this be a legitimate complaint from someone who hasn’t seen FiM?

I don’t know, perhaps we like this show for the same reason we like many Disney movies (family-friendly and enjoyable by the whole family), or why I still watch reruns of Arthur from time to time (even though it’s aimed at preteens…don’t judge :) ). Maybe it’s how the characters are actually quite witty and charming. Maybe it’s just the show’s creators’ ability to take a mundane premise like redecorating and actually make it interesting.

tl;dr: Even with occasional plots similar to “let’s redecorate the castle!”, do you still think MLP is as engaging and un-girly as we make it out to be? I’m just wondering if anyone’s done a real, unbiased, side-by-side comparison of G3 (or any other previous generation) vs G4.
