I’ve been here through other stuff over the years, some major, some less so, but this won’t be the end for me, I know that much.

I should have prefaced what I originally was going to before making even my SM64 post.
Some things I say I find overrated I don’t hate.
DOOM II is not a bad game.
It’s a fine game in it’s own right.
However, compared to the original, it falls WOEFULLY short, in pretty much EVERYTHING.
The Soundtrack, while good, is not quite to the level of the original.
The gameplay, while similar obviously, is heavily effected by the POOR level design in a NUMBER of levels.
The “City” levels in DOOM II are some of the WORST levels in any game I’ve EVER played.
I don’t need a game to hold my hand to tell me where to go, I had no trouble with the original DOOM at all, but DOOM II, the levels were so badly designed in some cases it was not clear at all where to go for my first time playing. And I’m pretty sure even on a hypothetical replay, I’d still have trouble navigating some levels, namely those “CITY” LEVELS.

Now let me talk about another game I find overrated.

DOOM II: Hell on Earth

I find this game absolutely extremely overrated.
The only thing good about it is the Super Shotgun.

Gameplay is infuriating compared to the first game, some of the puzzles are absolutely STUPID.
The Archvile and the Pain Elemental, god they are a HUGE pain.
The Revenant and the Mancubus were certainly a cool edition though, as for the Hellknight, they weren’t anything special till DOOM 3 when they got their own identity, instead of recolored, but weaker Baron of Hell.

I loved the original DOOM.
I’m going to be quite frank though.
After about only 7-10 levels, I stopped enjoying DOOM II.
It started becoming a chore to play after that, some of the levels took me up to half an hour to complete because compared to the first game, the directions were extremely unclear at times, especially in some of those GOD AWFUL “CITY” LEVELS.

I will probably replay DOOM at somepoint in my life, as well as DOOM 64 (My personal favorite). I’ve already replayed the new DOOM a number of times, I gave up on DOOM 3 (which I was enjoying, but Steam deleted my save file and I don’t feel like redoing it.)

I will NEVER replay DOOM II in my life. I can’t even begin to think of playing it again. Even with the amazingness of the Super Shotgun.

@Mikey
I suppose I may be being a tad bit unfair.
I just was saying in my personal opinion.
As I played it when I was relatively young, so I didn’t really have a “comprehensive” mind yet, but still found it a bit bleh at times.

Definitely was not old enough to be like “Yeah this sucks crap, and blah blah”
I just am basically recalling how I felt as a kid, the best I can.

@Mikey
I never said anything about it holding up. I just said I thought it wasn’t that great even for the time.
I also noted the story beat being a smaller point, basically a moot one, one that wasn’t important and didn’t really hinder the game much at all, pretty much non-existantly. I was just pointing it out.

@Gameplay The Pony

You barely even tried to counter my points.
I also said “one of my smaller points.”

In some cases, a game should have good story too.
There are games that don’t need an in your face story.

Mario and DOOM are two of the biggest examples.

But for me my favorite Mario game is, and always will be Super Mario Sunshine, which personally I feel outdid Super Mario 64 in almost every area.

I would have liked more levels without F.L.O.O.D. though, and the Final Boss Battle was woefully underwhelming, are my two biggest gripes with Super Mario Sunshine.

I’ll probably make a few posts here, but I’ll start off with one that I think is overrated, but is highly praised amongst the gaming community as the “very best of the series.”

Super Mario 64 is heavily overrated (But I still like it.)
Playing my fair share of Nintendo 64 games, the Camera System is called “revolutionary” for the time, but in my experience, it is far worse than even a number of other Nintendo 64 games.

The gameplay itself, feels very sluggish at times as well compared to some other Nintendo 64 games, including the other huge classic, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, despite having 10 more FPS than that game. And I’m not speaking combat, I’m speaking in general.

The controls, are not that great.
People speak of how they are better than the Nintendo DS’ version’s controls, I find them almost just as bad.

The story, is very generic, then again so are a number of Mario games, considering they are made mostly for fun rather than story. This is one of my smaller points as it doesn’t take much from the game at all in my opinion.

The level design…
This one is 50/50.
There are some amazingly designed levels,and then there are some very POORLY designed ones.
The biggest poor level design I can think of is that one world where the water can be drained and risen.
It’s a very confusing layout compared to pretty much every other level.
Another one that’s pretty bland is the second snow level.
Not the one with the Penguin rescue, but the one accessed later in the game.

Some levels were slightly revamped in the Nintendo DS remaster, which in my opinion is in general a better port, minus the controls being slightly worse than even the Nintendo 64 version.

The game’s most redeeming factor, is its soundtrack.

Overall, the game still gets a pretty decent rating from me (a 7.5/10)
But, the game is massively overrated, in my honest opinion.
