Perhaps just a message at the bottom of the ratings tag along the lines of:

If you are unsure, tag with the higher severity tag and report your concerns in a concise manner for a staff member to adjust.

It might make learning easier (since they’d be getting a staff-backed call on the matter) for those who upload stuff on a regular basis, and give everyone an out if they’re really unsure.

The issue with more/less guidelines always comes back to Rules as Read vs Rules as Interpreted. The former works great for limited situations where things can be numerically compared, but you’re right in that art can be super fuzzy, but that’s where you need a Word of God to step in and say "this is how it’s interpreted in this case."

As always, thanks for the help!

Rate higher if unsure isn’t actually the rule, being off is fine as long as it’s not hugely unreasonable.
It’s a bad idea to encourage misrating higher; from what I’ve seen, most people approach ratings with the idea that anything that turns them on or off is at least Suggestive.
This results in, for instance, a double standard on gender where males get lower ratings for the same levels of revealing outfits (neutral instead of turn-on), and one in the opposite direction for same-sex kissing (turn-off instead of turn-on).

I should probably consider some addendum talking about the very conceptual ideas behind rating, and link this thread or something.

Would this be considered safe or suggestive? I mean sure there’s really nothing sexual going on here but the description is definitely what makes this a little sexual.

Does this count as semi-grimdark I mean sure there’s nothing to dark going on but it is dark whenever you actually know what this is based off.

Not a Llama - Happy April Fools Day!

never big enough
@Undead dragon soldier
I believe the rule is that you rate based on what’s actually in the picture. If the picture only becomes semi-grimdark after you learn the necessary context from an outside article, then the picture isn’t semi-grimdark.

Ring-around-the-rosie does possibly have dark lyrics but the game itself isn’t warranting of a semi-grimdark tag.

@Undead dragon soldier
Based on the comments in that article, this may just be a folktale or a creepypasta, so it may not even be true in the first place. Again, probably not worth the semi-grimdark tag, especially when actual dark scenes in the show are still labeled Safe (e.g. Sombra’s death, Chrysalis violently attacking some of the main characters, Spike using his dragon breath on the Storm King’s soliders, etc.).

It’s not ring a round the roses it’s based off a really dark Japanese horror story called kagome kagome where one person stands in the middle and everyone else spins around the person in the middle and if they flinch they lose and what they have to do is guess who is behind them and if they guess wrong they will lose a limb or just be straight up killed.

It’s a pretty fucked up story but also really interesting.

And it is a true story I promise you, but you don’t have to believe me if you don’t want to.

Do we know that this is based on Kagome Kagome?

I read that person in the middle has to sit down blindfolded and Cozy Glow isn’t sitting down, doesn’t have her eyes closed, and isn’t wearing a blindfold. This likely isn’t it.

The people making this show aren’t Japanese and probably aren’t too familiar with Japanese culture (like Japanese children’s games or Japanese creepypastas). So why would they put that in the show? I think you’re looking a bit too deeply into this.

I don’t see anything that would put it at Questionable.

@Meanlucario
Safe; this came up before with >>1768545 and while it’s somewhat iffy, it wasn’t found to be a problem at Safe. There’s a similar style tagged "implied labia" that’s generally rated Suggestive, but that one usually has the crotch facing right at you and such.
