Blackjack’s at #1400 and is catching up to Pip. Also, 80 more images and Fallout Equestria will hit 10,000. And you could probably make every one of those Puppysmiles if you wanted. I mean, so little of her gets uploaded, like, we’re missing Pupppysmiles [sic]

Speaking of which, what happened to this thing? Still ongoing? Or did it die?

Actually, I wonder how Puppy would react if she found out about… it…

@Shadow the Hedgehog
Thanks a ton for the feedback! I wanted to react but was waiting to have something real to show and also didn’t want to flood the thread with a full script. And so many things are still up for changes.
I was thinking, maybe, I should make it its own thread?

I’d be really grateful if you kept giving me advice. :D (If it’s not too much to ask)
Someone versed in FO/FOE could improve things massively helping with what I should include or reference.

One of the challenges is building up Pipsqueak to a hero you’d want to follow. I’m trying hard to hammer out those personality quirks that’d need to be present in every scene to keep him memorable.

I wanted to react some of the things you asked:

“Princess Twilight” - I’m considering this because it opens up many possibilities, but the original plan was not to go against the source TOO hard, although frankly I’ve done that so maybe this can fly too.
There are many points that I liked to see while reading the FOE fic that needed an explanation. Like for example, and glad that you mention it, the creation of firearms. I always wanted to know why do ponies had the desire to create ballistic weapons even before the war conflicts. They had magic and THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP with them, only 2-6 ponies are needed to stop an incoming war, so should be a big and really serious reason to create guns and go VIOLENCE REALLY IS THE ANSWER.
I want to know a bit more about how ponies had the idea to create firearms, what was the inspiration.
Sidetracking here a bit: “Pip” is a “fix fic” in many ways.
Respectful I hope but still plays with things I didn’t like in the original. For example: “Briddle Gossip” establishes pretty well that Ponyville has never seen a zebra. Yet in FOE there’s this whole empire of them next door and some even living in Equesria. So I thought about that and found a pretty interesting way that even let me add things like the Resource Wars (from FO), African history, Daring Don’t and other cool stuff.

Similarly, violence in Kkat’s is commonplace from the beginning. He mused in a blog post that firearms may have been created by the zebra long before the war to hunt large animals, which I just find unacceptable in the show spirit.
What I wanted to capture was this process of old Equestria descending into this warlike place and how those traditions could break down and what caused it. New MLP seasons actually provided a lot of ideas on the unnoticed hidden corruption that would eat at Equestria. :p Books like Zweig’s “The World of Yesterday” (chronicling how a golden age of prosperity could be replaced (for reasons both social and economic) by a thirst for war) have also been a huge inspiration.

Back on the question though: when the Elements are first deployed (to end a conflict between dragon and griffon on Zebrical soil for Zebrican resources), they full of confidence. But instead of it being over quick like it always was, they soon get slammed with the fact that there are many pockets of conflict that they have to put an end to one by one.
After like a month of wandering from one spot to the next, experiencing all sorts of horror enduring harsh conditions, Fluttershy breaks down and wants out, and Applejack assaults her in an attempt to bring her to her senses, as lives depend on them arriving in time. AJ is ironically the most caring and least racist at this point, unlike RD for example who’d be quite cool with leaving the zebra sort their own problems out. TS also realizes that the Elements are getting weaker in power, and after AJ backs off in horror of what she was about to, they realize that this situation that they never experienced before is tearing their friendship apart, and so after just 1.5 months of participation, the Elements are pulled out at their own request.
Which leaves the remaining troops (mostly formar royal guards, including one naive fresh recruit who dreamed of serving Luna) in a hopeless position.

So when the Flim Flam brothers come with a suggestion that can level the playing field (“The griffons already accepted, but we wanted to offer it to you first, like the good patriots we are”), even promise improvements that can penetrate dragon hide with sufficient funding - well, firearms become the SAVIOR of the war, quickly tipping the scales in the ponies’ favor. THe dragons are beaten so thoroughly that they’d never again participate in the war, and while the griffons would regroup and acquire their own guns soon, they are beaten out of Zebrica for the moment. And then guns can be hung up and forgotten…Haha, so they naively think for a few years. In fact Zebrica becomes so poor and so littered with leftover weapons in the aftermath that a reign of warlords soon begins, and pro-Equestrian elder leadership soon losing any confidence and real power over the population, and a warlord who gains prominence by defeating his rivals and re-pacifying those areas soon emerges as the people’s choice.
Even Equestria initially supports Caesar, mostly because it’d be dangerous not too with the anti-Equestrian mood in Zebrica and fervently hoping that he’ll be a benevolent dictator. Which he is, for a few years at least until he soldifies his power base and has to come up with new ways to keep Zebrica on his side.

On the topic of violence, I definitely felt that FOE was way TOO pro violence, as if written by an American military family kid. (I don’t know KKat’s real bg.)
With Pip as a hero, I wanted to make a case for WHY rejecting that notion is not naive as a many FO and FOE fans seem to believe.

It’s a challenge since the story calls for Pip himself being a soldier and choosing to kill people, but I think I’m starting find the right emotional journey for him. :D

It was similarly difficult to write about sex life that so much of the plot hangs on: he ignores but has loveless sex with Ruby, he has a short fling with AB, but he wants to buold a relationship with childhood friend Dinky yet has a lifelong infatuation with Luna…it’s really hard to make it work in a way that does NOT make you lose all respect for him, but I think I’ve found the right tone.

Most challenging right now is how many childhood stories I need. I could write a flashback with literally every MLP character, as young Pip saw them and what they become. Some of them (DT, Dinky, Ruby, Vinyl) are guaranteed because of the plot but there are so many more.

Changelings:

I added them in the following fashion:

Post-Gem Wars, ponies and Griffonstone have a cold war situation, no shots fired but an aqrms race going on. Spy paranoia is rampant. And suddenly ponies realize that they have this entire nest of born potential spies right next door.
See, you could argue that zebra, griffons, even dragons are just like us, but changelings are monsters, they feed on love, raised from birth as soldiers, and they’ve already attacked Canterlot before.

So with unprecented unanimousity, pony armies descend on the hive and completely destroy it. Queen Chrysalis is MIA, presumed dead (actually very much alive and will successfully infiltrates one of the Stables with her servants, which will survive well into the Littlepip era).

Which leaves only one major changeling character: Myriad, an assassin-for-hire quadrople agent and the main antagonist of part 1.
He kills several main characters and is a constant threat.
ut he is also sympathetic, fighitng a one man war of revenge against a world against her for her race’s survival.
She has an odd relationship with Pip that evolves every time they fight and Pip matures.

They first meet after she had just broken into a MOM and even attacked Twilight Sparkle; Pip, as the assistant of Bonbon, is set on her tail. We learn that she fled after she learned of the megaspells they are developing, and her goal remains bringing the remaining changelings and changeling eggs to Griffonstone, to safety, as she believes Equestria to be doomed. But she is quite prepared to take more assassination jobs to fund this.

I did consider swapping her with Chrysalis at one point since they fill a similar role, but I think Myriad works better, since you can really feel the journey and motivations of the character, from survivor trying to get revenge to savior of her people and ambigious villain.

I’d love to get your opinion on more, share some WIP scripts and sketches maybe, maybe make a thread for it.

I regularly have issues like:
What does this place look like, from inside and outside? What’s the map of the post-Foe world and each settlement? What are the key events on the pre-war and the 200* year timeline? How do people see THIS or THAT character, will they get mad if I make them too cruel or chill etc.?

  • Oh yeah, I didn’t want to rant too much but the 200 year gap is bonkers. Kkat was a FO3 player regrettably and used that. FO1 was set merely 80-ish years after the war and 50-ish since the first vaults opened. FO then kept stretching it as they kept adding more games, but people still scavening old stuff and living in a post war state 200+years after? It’s so unrealistic and I hate it.

    @Wiimeiser
is it just me or is Pip a descendant of Applejack and Ruby Pinch?

Why Ruby? I used the same idea but because I had a specific Gone with the Wind-ish love triangle in mind.
Oh and probably because LP’s mom was a drinker. And also cuz I have this headcanon that the Berry line has a gene that makes them prone to developing addictions that manifests differently in every family member - Ruby Pinch was boy crazy, her mom was a drinker, and LP took drugs. (But beat it.)

@Vree
I figured Ruby because she’s a unicorn and is presumably related to Berry Punch, who seems to be genetically destined for addictions like Pip. And the whole alcohol thing with the mothers, of course.

@Vree

Ok wow, you really did took the job to think all about your fic, which I frankly would love to read.
It’s been loooong time since I readed a FOE story, and started to focus in other things like reading FOE-related webcomics (but those are very scarce and they update slowly, so I usually wait like months to read new pages). Specially moved on after I read Murky Number Seven, which, while the fanfic is amazing, it turned more and more dark, and I got tired of that (specially after reading Proyect Horizonts).

I am planning to read that one about comedy, can’t remember the name, “Dodge” something… Which speaking about it, do you plan to insert light or comedic moments to in your material? This is just me, but many people has been using grimdark elements TOO MUCH, and I feel putting some funny moments there and there couldn’t hurt. I mean, putting some not-serious scenes can also work in stories that focuses in war and post-apocalyptic radiated wastelands, right? But this is my opinion, because well, keeping reading “In the grim post-war era of the far future there is only survival” in a lot of fanfics just got tired.

And I feel you, the 200 years gap is really not necessary, but it became an important element in FOE fics, that is almost mandatory, since after those years, the “good, interesting” things starts right after that, like Pip’s escape to the wasteland, Blackjack starting her adventure, etc. Everyone just want to be part of that action. Yeah, I feel more people should focus between that gap. As far as I know, only the Derpy’s Chronicles fanfic gets a focused in her adventures during those years (well, mostly, only the first chapters focus on them).

Right About Everything
Since we were talking about power levels in the season 8 thread, I just wanted to mention how I really enjoy exploring what modern weaponry does to MLP power levels.

I had some small ‘Ember’ sized young dragons appear for pretty much that sole purpose. They quickly proved pretty op as expected against small groups, but the moment they hit a large battlefield they quickly got absolutely wiped out, quickly learning that they are not immune to large caliber weaponry, and that dragons tend to attract every big gun the enemy can muster. And Spike noted that even an adult dragon cannot ignore AA fire, and indeed goes down instantly to a battleship cannon.

A flashback with Celestia also has Rainbow Dash point out that repeated anti-armor shots will break even a Princess’s shield, and Luna is noted to have gone down on her ass from one close range shot from a breaching shotgun. On the other hand a ghoul solider cheerfully recounts a story about a couple of units of elite zebra soldiers swarming an isolated Princess Luna once, and how she quickly routed them all by herself.
