Fanfic Writing General

To the people that regularly read fics here. Do you prefer to read a series of fics from start to finish or do you prefer to pic a standalone story from a collection in a given universe?
 
While I have a main series I’d like to write I also want to create some side stories that can focus on other characters.But all of the stories would be set in the same universe.
 
However because they’re set in the same universe I don’t know whether I can expect people to be up to date on lore that may have been covered in other stories.

I don’t have a preference myself, but if I find a story I like and its part of a series, I go looking for the first one and read a bit of that. If I like that too, I read the stories in order. If I dnt like it, I just read the bit that caught my attention.

Either way, really. If you go the side-story route, you can always link the main story and any stories you would need to read first in the long description, after all.

I really need to get back into writing. i’ve been so caught up with other stuff that I’ve been completely neglecting it. I’m going to turn my attention back to my FE story because that’s the one I have the most developed

New SPS Pokemon Episode: “The Day-Night Conflict”
 
Prologue: while the squad takes a nice day to veg out with unexpected trainers Ash Ketchum and Misty, Amaldo, the reformed E.V.A mastermind, is solemn at the fact of how in his evil past wanted nothing but expectation of power from his genetically made pokemon. So, while in the search for new pokemon to assist Amaldo, the squad come across a conflict between 2 legendary pokemon known as Helirea and Dakelene. Both legends have been fighting over who takes the most part of each day and night of the peaceful village of Apollo Valley. While striving to find help, they come across some unlikely pokemon… Megas to be exact…

Been looking for a fic I read before for the last few hours but just can’t find it. It’s one of those “Principal Celestia is the mother of human Sunset” stories, where this one is her reminiscing about memories of her Sunset before she went missing. I remember it being framed with Celestia talking with Equestrian Sunset in the present before cutting to flashbacks.
 
If anyone knows the story I’m talking about I’d thank you for telling me.

I made a calendar for my story. Not like a calendar to keep track of events in-story, but a whole new calendar. Somewhat necessary, as there’s only 355 days per year.
 
Also, there’s no moon in the world the story is set, but it’s been like that since the beginning.

I came up with an idea for a character for my FE story. I’m debating whether or not they should be incorporated as a primary character, or remain a secondary character, since the main cast is pretty crowded as it is (32, at last count).

What about Spike?, what is going to happened to him too?.
 
I am curious about what happened to them?, and what of their karma look like?.
 
And what is twilight going to do now?, since she is King Sombra’s student?.

There are times when I come up with random bits of dialogue that are connected to anything, but I like them enough that I want to find a use for them eventually. Like this exchange:
 
“Did you really think I wouldn’t recognize you just because you were wearing a mask?”  
“…Yes! That’s the whole point of wearing a mask!”

I used a random number generator to assign birthdays to the characters in my FE story. Its unlikely to come up in story, but I figured I should cover all my bases.
 
For some reason, most of the birthdays are in the fifth month, Enderi, and the first, Narwain- both have five each. I can understand Enderi, since it has more days than the other months (40), but I don’t know why Narwain has so many. And somehow, one month didn’t get any birthdays at all.
 
Also decided to add that last character. Her name’s Megaera. She’s a one armed swordsman that takes a lot of cues from Baiken.
 
Also found a website that lets me make fantasy calendars. Useful, since a year in Aurea is a eleven days shorter than a year on Earth.

I’ve never played Fire Emblem, but your story does sound pretty interesting.

Well, it’s a Fire Emblem story only in the sense that there’s an artifact known as “the Fire Emblem” that factors into the plot, and a character that cameos in every game makes an appearance here as well. Everything else is (mostly) original.
 
Made a map for the setting, too. Posted it a while ago.

I’ve generally never included author’s notes in my stories, save for announcements apologizing for delays, but I’m debating whether or not I should include them for my newest story. I want to share bits and pieces of the creative process for the story, sharing the inspiration for different characters, regions of the story world, and lore, as well as how the story evolved from its original conception to what it is now. But at the same time, I don’t want to bore people, since what I find interesting may not necessarily align with what other people find interesting.
 
Speaking of the story itself, I’m waiting to finish the first three chapters before posting. If anyone’s interested, I’d be happy to provide a link once they’re finished.

Though maybe link them in a separate document if they run a little long.

If you’re gonna put them in, never put them mid-story. Either at the beginning or the end.

I was thinking of putting them at the end if I was going to include them- Archive of Our Own has a handy feature that lets you stick on author’s notes at the beginning or end as something separate from the actual story.
 
Why would I put an author’s note in the middle of a chapter? That’s like, My Immortal tier amateurism.

I’ve seen people do it all the time and it hurts me.

I can’t believe that I’m still making modifications to my story’s backstory even as I write it. Over the last two or three days, I created a new region of the story’s world, gave the main character’s Ring of Power its real… uh, power, and finally ironed out the main tenets of another character’s religious beliefs.
