If you did an alternate universe of MLP...

How would you make it?

welp… one in when fisics actualy aplies, like the sun and moon moving by phisics law instead of 2 princess,  
weather independient of pegasus acts, all that stuff

I usually prefer more calming alternate universes and enjoy them when their use is more than just the ponies all being anthros or if a canon story ended differently. At the same time, I typically find myself not preferring alternate universes made to purposefully depress the reader. Even when it’s done right, like in Asylum, for example, it doesn’t suit my tastes.

I personally would change things like character’s ages, appearance, etc. Basically, a semi-reboot ala JJ Abrams’s Star Trek where it takes place in an alternate reality.

The major change I would make would be alot less pink and hearts everywhere, I think the show kinda goes overboard with it, maybe give it a more late 1800s theme or maybe 1950s because both looked pretty cool, one of the two. Balance out the genders as well. Of course keep the magic and stuff for the most part but I think the whole friendship is magic thing being literal is a bit far fetched. Like blueplant said physics would actually apply too, with the alicorns still being more or less immortal due to being connected to said celestial bodies and the weather managing itself with pegasi only stepping in when needed. And definitely see more of the world instead of a few cities, maybe have the main characters be some sort of adventurers allowing them to see the world.
 
This ended up being way longer than I thought it was going to be.

Well, for starters, I would make all the events from Magical Mystery Cure and onward non-canon (I’m sorry Twilicorn fans, but I just can’t wrap my head around the idea that five common citizens are best friends with an OP semi-monarch, who just happens to live in the same town as them.). Despite this major change, however, I would keep some canonlogical elements-such as Maud Pie, the CMC getting their cutie marks, and Rainbow Dash becoming a Wonderbolt-intact.
 
Next, I’d modernize Equestria…but not to the point where everypony’s driving around in automobiles or relying on solar power (Although technically, solar power would work great in Equestria due to the fact that the weather is manually controlled.). At best, I’ll give them internet, phone lines, and vending machines.
 
Finally, as another user pointed out, I’d add RL physics to their universe. TBH I’m getting sick and tired of magic being the foundation for how everything works in this crazy world of technicolor pony weirdos; plus it gives me some bad religious vibes whenever I read about it (Replace “magic” with something like “God” or “Muhammad” and you’ll see what I mean.).
 
And…that’s all I can think of at the moment.

Add some more technology to co-exist with magic  
Make magic more flexible so more races can do more amazing things. I’m not saying make everyone alicorns but give them ‘something’ unique related to their creativity and inner talents. Help balance things out a bit.  
More mythical or magical beasties maybe.  
But still keep things light hearted but with some tense moments.

Has anyone ever thought of doing time travel to make an alternate universe like with Star Trek?

Agreed on that first point. When you give your main character unlimited reality-bending, fight-cheating, political-authoritative power like that, you destroy the audience’s ability to relate to that character as well as destroy the show’s potential for believable dramatic tension. Everyone around here seems to pretend that that isn’t the case, or worse, celebrates it.

I have this vague notion for a sci-fi alt-future where Equestria has reached space age tech (lasers, robots, FTL travel, cybernetic augmentations,etc.); Celestia has passed on and consequently Equestria’s sun has gone out, and now Luna leads her people to the stars in search of a new home. Moon has probably been converted into a sort of capital ship or somesuch.

I actually have my own idea you see it fallows the plot of EQG except instead twilight ends up in marvel comic universe 2 months after events of Avengers vs x-men at jean grey school for higher learning were that universe’s rainbow dash, pinkie pie, applejack, flattershy & rarity are new students it also explains why they have different skin color since it apart of there mutation that got there powers thanks to AvX the fanfiction goes all the way up until short before events of secret wars(2015) each part is done like an arc on a comic the magical & magic related marvel characters play a big role celestia counterpart is thor level herone
 
twilight sparkle: trying to get used to being human oid, how magic works in this universe & finding the crown well having random team/solo adventures a long the way
 
rainbow dash: has super strength & super speed she is a very big fan of captain marvel(carol danvers) & she-hulk she & flattershy are lovers
 
pinkie pie: similar to her pony counterpart childhood friends with doreen green(squirrel girl) & friends with the comedic hero community like deadpool & antman greets new students with partys
 
applejack: her family farm is just out side new york & couple minutes away from the school has super strength & really tough skin like luke cage
 
rarity: into fashion like her pony counterpart also however has a genius level mind & is able to make lots of stuff big fan of fashion heavy heroes like the wasp & emma frost but genius heroes like tony, reed & t’challa
 
flattershy: similar to her pony counterpart is able to talk to animals & copy animals abilitys just by talking touching them her & dash are dating

I’d change the time period to be around the 17th century and add monsters like werewolves, ghouls, and witches.

So I was thinking about doing a story called something like “The lost storm” or something. And it was going to be set in a universe that was fairly canonical.
 
Except it would be set in year 300 of Celestia’s solitary rule.
 
And there would be a heretical priestly order devoted to the worship of the Sun Princess that jammed chunks of crystallized god horse into their flesh in order to be more like Celestia. Side effects include vastly reduced life span, smoking and undo attention from griffons due to the persistent smell of roasting meat.
 
The frozen north would be filled with the ruins of myriad ungulate civilizations that couldn’t embrace sufficient harmony to fend off the windigos. Each one a twisted mockery of pony civilization with a lovecraftian under tone as these mighty civilizations attempt to reawaken when they are explored.
 
There would be a ancient super weapon forged by the ancient pegasi in the form of a monolithic living storm pony that either escaped or was released during dismantlement and is hiding in the frozen wastes somewhere.
