Description

My theory about Opaline Arcana from G5: Her next plot in Chapter 5 will probably have references to Greek mythology & history. Here goes the evidence:
  1. Opaline says Alicorns came from a place called “Skyros”. There’s actually a place called “Skyros” in real life, it’s an island located in Aegean Sea, Greece.
  2. “Skyros” as in Greek “Σκύρος”, originally means “stone debris”. And “Opaline” derives from “opal”, which can be viewed as a kind of precious stone.
  3. The voice actor of Opaline Arcana is Athena Karkanis, obviously a name of Greek ancestry, which the actor is indeed of Greek descent.
  4. Opaline calls herself a “Fire Alicorn”. Do I have to mention how important fire is in Greek culture & history? Prometheus stole fire, Hephaestus forged with fire, Phoenix reborn from fire, fire is one of the four elements in Thales’ theory, and don’t forget Greek Fire was used by Byzantines as a secret weapon for hundreds of years.
  5. The Greeks LOVE purple. From ancient Gods to aristocrats of Hellenistic Period to Byzantine Basileus, they loved purple. And Opaline happens to be purple. (btw can we call her “Opaline Porphyrogenita”? lol)
So, to be concluded, now we have an Alicorn, who is purple, who says she represents fire, who was born in an island coincidentally shares name with a real life Greek island, whose voice actor is of Greek descent. This must have been a total coincidence… or not?

“breed of ponies who live on the island of Skyros called Skyros ponies.”
They are nearly extinct. A census in 2009 estimated that there were only 220 Skyrian ponies alive at that time, with 152 of them living in Skyros itself.

“Georgios Papadopoulos, the infamous Greek dictator” Is she a religious nut? Papadopoulos’ regime was infamous for its fanatical Christian beliefs, and the marginalization and persecution of religious minorities. Here is some typical rhetoric by Papadopoulos:
“Our obligations are described by both our history and our religion. Christ teaches Harmony and Love. Our history demands faith in our country. […] Greece is being reborn, Greece will accomplish great things, Greece will live forever.”
Due to all the propaganda about Greece’s rebirth, the military junta’s symbol was “a phoenix rising from its ashes”.

“btw can we call her “Opaline Porphyrogenita” “
Porphyrogénnētos (masculine) and Porphyrogénnētē (feminine) (literally “born to the purple”) are titles reserved for children born to the reigning emperor or empress. The reference is to the dye color of Tyrian purple, which was restricted by law for members of imperial and royal families. Do we even know who Opaline’s parents were?

Uhm, yes, there could be some references to Greek mythology, and Athena Karkanis, the actress who voices Opaline is in fact half Greek. Nevertheless, connecting Opaline to Greek mythology too much could undesirable.
First of all, little to nothing is known about the place called Skyros. What was that place? A city of alicorns? Some kind of a castle or a manor? And furthermore - how can we be sure that this Skyros was not made up by Opaline along with the entire story she told to Misty? Opaline is not a trustworthy person, especially due to the fact that such kind of people heavily rely on deception.
Second, fire is important in many other mythologies. Fire is a prominent element in Azeri culture, it is being worshipped by Zoroastrians, and it’s being featured in numerous folk traditions all over the world.
When it comes to the color purple - not only a lot of people love it, but it is also the traditional color of the European royalty. A lot of kings and queens are often portrayed having a purple mantle.
And finally. Some Greeks might even be offended when someone would try to associate Opaline to Greece. She is, by far one of the darkest MLP villains, rivaling Lord Tirek and King Sombra. Moreover, unlike King Sombra she is a relatively well-written villain, while Sombra even lacks a proper backstory (IDW comic books are often considered non-canon), while Opaline have a lot of mysteries to be unveiled, and she already have motives for her villainy, unlike King Sombra. While without the nearly-non-canon IDW comics no one can’t tell what King Sombra was driven by, Opaline already has her motives at least partially revealed. She is a Nazi bigot who believes that alicorns are the master race, and detests other pony races. Nevertheless, nothing is known of how Opaline ended up with such an atrocious worldview, and how she became an alicorn, since her story of Skyros should be taken with great caution.
So, if Opaline have something to do with Greece, the first thing I can think of is Georgios Papadopoulos, the infamous Greek dictator, since Opaline got a similar worldview. Nevertheless, it’s reasonable to assume that Greeks are ashamed of such a person from their history, similar to the way how Germans are ashamed of the darkest era of their history, when they were ruled by the infamous failed Austrian painter, who managed to become the most evil creature ever to live on Earth.
