Are we even watching the same web show, Visitor?  
Also I remember Yahtzee mentioning he enjoyed classical JRPGs like FF6 and the wackier series like Earthbound and the Mario RPGs, he just hates the generic JRPGs with angsty androgynous teenagers with ridiculous hair, outfits, and characterization.

The degree at which he hates on games that depend upon competition with other players primarily, is little more than childish, and reeks of insecurity. Otherwise he’s great for a few laughs now and then.

I heard the Rune Factory games were pretty good. Still, my favorite classic JRPG has to be The Legend of Dragoon. That game needs a sequel or a remake.

I really like the games that blend gameplay types like Rune Factory. It’s got dungeon crawls, dating, farming, ranching, catching monsters, etc. It’s awesome.
 
I’m also a big fan of Harvest Moon in general, which some consider to be an RPG.
 
Tangentially, I also like the old menu style combat (which I felt like Grandia perfected; perfect mix of action and strategy) better. I bought Xenoblade on the Wii and while it’s a good game I can’t stand the combat.

And I can’t really hate the characters in RoF. You’ve got Robin from the Teen Titans cartoon and Nathan Drake voicing two of the main characters!

Some new JRPGS are pretty interesting, its just the new FF games that bug me.
 
Resonance of Fate is a pretty good recent JRPG if memory serves.

I don’t like many of the newer ones but I still love the Shin Magami games and Atlus in general. I grew up on JRPGs and I still like their narrative/character-based focus.
