Its a great piece of art!
Gotta agree with Zebs observation, you can see his breath so he is alive.
Hes likely in deep shock because lets face it, his ship has been destroyed in a naval battle. Just think pearl harbour starring ben afflick, only enemy ships instead of planes.
Also, it’s kinda odd how different lifeforms are adapted to different environments… That merpony, for example, is perfectly fine in icy cold water in huge swells. The human pony, on the other hand hoof…
Before I continue on my epic vector, I need a better computer. Trying to do a lot of stuff with live path effects and envelope deformations etc. makes composing a vector too laggy for my 6 year old desktop. Will likely upgrade when AMD releases Rysen processors and their new Vega videocards.
More related to this image: the pony is not frozen, its water rolling off from the stormy waves. If I had to guess its a pretty good storm with 20 foot swells or so. Either the pegasi ponies were all killed off, or they were trying to sneak in under the cloud layer to another country? With the three main pony tribes, would make some very interesting warfare dynamics.
I’m good with vectors… but I want to learn how to draw with this style so I can more than pony stuff. This is amazing.
I’ve dabbled in a more painty style before, but vector proportions don’t work in it. It’s almost embarrassing how little it got - probably rightfully so - and I haven’t really felt a desire to spend a dozen hours on another paint style since then… >>1185247
@Claw
There’s two more burning, sinking ships behind him, and three more ships with no visible damage way behind that.
If they’re Imperial Japanese ships, probably best to just die.
If they’re not, then maybe they’ll pick up survivors if he can hold on for another ten minutes?
Also worth noting, with Radar-controlled guns, the US had a HUGE advantage at night combat in WWII.
Don’t forget that he have eyes roll out like a dead person….
Anyway dead or not - he is bleeding and freezing on empty ocean in the middle of snowing night. Think about it.
@runner2
It’s a warship, and there’s a host of other warships in the background, some sinking, others sailing.
This is definitely a somewhat realistic depiction of the aftermath of a battle in rough seas, WWI or II. Probably North Atlantic, though I don’t think any major battles like this happened since there were only a handful of Battlecruisers there (in WWII).
The Aleutians saw some naval conflict, but I don’t think any battlecruisers or battleships were involved.
I don’t know anything about naval battles in WWI, though.
His ship is definitely a cruiser or battleship of some kind. Looks vaguely like a WWI dreadnaught, many of which continued service into WWII.
That looks an awful lot like a New York class battleship, though.
NY class:
No New York class ships were ever lost in combat. There were only two, the Texas and the New York.

it’s snowing, the deck of that ship is covered in ice, and it’s not really clear whether that’s water running off of him, or icicles. he may be supporting himself on her leg, or he may have been supporting himself on the edge of the lifeboat before freezing solid, and she’s just lifting his body off of it. also no eye shine.
also she’s crying.
plenty of ways for the artist to indicate he’s still alive, if jhonnyrebel didn’t want us to think he was a meat popsicle.
@Background Pony #62D2
I think it’s because of the way the water running off of him and the Orca-pony was drawn. It looks similar to icicles. So it gives the impression that he’s been there long enough to freeze solid.
But considering the fact that we can see his breath misting in front of him. I’m fairly certain he’s alive~
Not sure why everyone seems to think the pony in the lifeboat is frozen/dead. He’s soaking wet, but clearly supporting himself on her leg/fin. And bleeding and in shock, but who wouldn’t be?
