I’m not sure strict face/heel divisions even matter that much anymore. I mean he’s not as bad as Roman, but he was kinda the heel in the rumble.
 
I think slightly more complex storytelling is possible these days to be honest.

Given Cena mentioned (in kayfabe) that the crowd reaction bothered him, I think they needed an over babyface for him to beat to get that reaction. Cena was acting a little grumpy both there and at the rumble, maybe he’ll be running a Angle style ‘stop booing me you pathetic ingrates’ gimmick for wrestlemania.

Maybe they have other plans for Balor. I think that the WWE writers think that losing to John Cena is “an honour”.

Smiles Yay! Nakamura & Asuka winning their Rumble Matches made it the most satifying Outcome atleast since Edge in 2010! I live in the same country as Queen Elizabeth, and that doesn’t make me royalty. Roman lives in Tampa Bay, Rodriguez lives in Miami. They’re 281 miles away from each other.

No one has ever given a damn about the singles matches at the Rumble anyway. WatchCulture even did a video on “Ten Royal Rumble singles matches that were actually pretty good, honest”.
 
To be frank though, it’s fine. Every single match on the Takeover Card was different, and the two matches on the Rumble card continue this. Takeover didn’t have a rumble, it didn’t have a “Giant” match, and it didn’t have a Handicap match. So frankly, comparisons are pointless.
 
(If Gargano/Almas isn’t match of the year though, I’ll eat my boots. And it’s bloody JANUARY!)
