The reason I had initially said the ‘p’ was silent is because of words where Pterus is the root word but the p gets dropped for pronouncing. Words like Pterodactyl and other dinosaurs.
 
I think the link you gave explains awesomely how to pronounce it in it’s proper Latin form. Whereas I did what English is good at and bastardized it to make it easier to say.”

Probably just about how it looks; the ‘p’ would be silent, the ‘e’ as in ‘let’, ‘u’ as in ‘put’.
