That could’ve been used to show there was some good in them and that they could start to see that helping others feels good. Instead, the writers used this as a means to justify that they’ll always be evil, irredeemable monsters.
No comeuppance for freeing 2 villains from Tartarus, 1 villain from the nether and uniting them with an idle Chrysalis. Teleporting Sombra past ALL the crystal ponies’ defenses? NOPE. Hooking up three villains with a super powered weapon? NOPE. Having the Tree of Harmony (one of his few weaknesses destroyed?) NOPE! Nearly dooming the entirety of Equestria? NOPE. HE GETS TO DECIDE THE FATE! Quality writing.
My head canon is when Discord has the audacity to suggest a millennia long petrification…
Celestia replies: “No, Discord. You tried to reform these… FOUR * REVIVES SOMBRA * … AND YOU WILL SEE IT THROUGH! You will take these delinquents to your chaos realm and do so. And should they still run amok in Ponyville after, you will be responsible for their actions!”
Discord: “B-but! BUT!!!”
Celestia: “No buts! Reap what you sow!”
Discord: “Fine…” * snaps a defiant group of villains away * AFTER THE CREDITS
four villains running amok in Discord’s realm, Chrysalis and Sombra are blasting each other, Tirek is trying to drain things and cut to poor Discord having Cozy Glow pulling painfully at his goatee *
Discord: “I think petrification would be a kinder punishment than THIS.” END
This way Discord finally gets some lasting consequences for continuing to screw with everyone. On top of that, the villains aren’t redeemed, but it’s up to the watcher to imagine if Discord could teach them friendship!

Are you saying those first 4 seasons were flawless with no erroneous episodes? Because that’s wrong. I can name at least 4 bad ones from Season 2.
The “show went to shit” whenever you stopped watching it. So in other words you have Season 1 purists who don’t think any of the non Faust approved seasons count and OG writing staff purists who think the show went to shit after that but before Season 5.
because CLEARLY thinking a show went to shit after 4+ seasons, over 100 episode, and the departure of the last original members of the writing team from writing roles is the exact same thing as thinking only the first season counts.

Yes, and most of them are cute and all. But, outside of Rarity, Cozy Glow, and maybe Trixie, I’m not exactly a fan of this show anymore. Primarily because of the reasons I had previously mentioned. Even before the finale, the writers had taken what was once a charming and innocent kid’s show, and made it cruel and mean-spirited…all in a desperate attempt to pander to the adult portion of the fanbase, that essentially stole the show from it’s target audience. That is my actual problem.

Regarding this show, sure. I’m pretty content in everyday life, however. As a writer, myself, the bad writing had actually managed to influence my own projects…even leading to the creation of what will soon become one of my absolute favorites series I will ever write. I guess you can call that irony.
