This should have actually happened in the show, or heck, if I were Celestia back in season 3 and somehow had the ability to see into the future of season 9, I not only would have left Discord as a stone statue, but would have shattered it to the point where he’d be blown to dust, scattered to the wind, and spread so thin that he’d never be able to form a consciousness again, much less a body.

Thing is, he’s immortal. I wonder if once drained he loses that immortality. You’ll also have to deal with the chaos energy which is apparently very difficult to control (only fully powered Tirek could handle it, Pinkie and Cozy Glow both went out of control using it).

Three if you count the alternate timeline where Rainbow Dash doesn’t complete her Rainboom and the Elements aren’t used to seal him. He’s dressed as a king here. Again, he’s ruling.
 

 
And then were he struck a deal with Tirek to rule of Equestria together…
 

 
So yeah… He’s literally tried it several times. Is not even guilty about doing it, so it stands to reason he’ll do it again.

Oh yes, make no mistake, Discord allowed this to happen. The Tree of Harmony being destroyed, he planned(a huge benefit to him, having one of his few weaknesses destroyed), the Crystal Empire’s defenses being completely bypassed was by his magic alone, and empowering the remaining three villains with Grogar’s Bell was entirely because he set those 3 villains up with this. My headcanon is the second Fluttershy dies of natural causes Discord will bring chaos upon Equestria again, only Twilight will have no Elements of Harmony to counter him.
It’s why I’m pissed the writers had no comeuppance or inconvenience Discord had to suffer (like losing his chaos magic or something.) Like he already didn’t care to reform, betrayed the Mane 6 to Tirek and literally caused several villains to nearly take over. HE. IS. LITERALLY. TRYING. TO. FUCK. THE. MANE. 6. OVER.
I don’t get how this is not addressed (I just chalk it up to piss poor writing and pretend that Celestia brings this up, tells Discord “You planned to ““reform”” these FOUR revives Sombra correct? WELL YOU WILL SEE IT THROUGH! You will take these four to your chaos realm and do so. And should they still run amok you will be responsible for their actions!”…)

I think that a spaceman should’ve forced Discord to write a gazillion apology letters to the whole planet of Equestria and the spaceman should take away his powers with Grogar’s bell until he wrote the apology letters to every-creature in Equestria.  
Then the spaceman gives him back his powers and orders Princess Celestia and Luna to turn him to stone, and orders Pinkie Pie to build a more powerful party cannon to blast Grogar’s enchantment bell with no powers into outer space where it won’t cause anymore damage.  
And many moons later, the spaceman will order Princess Twilight Sparkle to free Discord from his stone prison and make sure he doesn’t do what happened many moons ago again, and to have a royal guard keep an eye on him and follow him around to make sure he doesn’t do anymore damage to Equestria ever again.
