To my knowledge equestria girls was viewed as a smashing success by hasbro: Their Toy sales went up due to the dolls being bought, and bronies were at least lukewarm about it instead of hating it with a fiery passion. Plus they extended the theater showings due to it doing better than they anticipated.
 
 
So while I WISH it was a flop, I think it was a success in hasbro’s financial view.

Probably the former. I don’t think EQG Pinkie would yap about Twilight and Spike’s EQG counterparts living in the city if they weren’t trying to lead into a potential sequel.  
Or maybe regular Twilight goes through the mirror again and the whole counterpart thing is forgotten and discarded. It might be the better choice for the story, since I don’t think anyone wants to sit through a short repeat of the first movie to make EQG Twilight friends with the others, or for EQG Twilight to just be friends with the 5 for no adequately explored reason.

One question… is this EQG universe Twilight or Pony Universe Twilight? Because the portal opens once every two and a half years. So either they’re jumping a significant amount of time ahead, or there are other ways into that world.
 
Either way I’ll be grabbing some popcorn and watching this shitstorm from a safe distance.
