Luna had more going to her to set her up as a victim though. The backstory depicted her as being sad at the ponies not Appreciating the night she made for her, and the storybook at least showed her sad before her attempt to create eternal night.
 
 
Sunset’s done nothing though. She’s not performing any works for people or upset at not being thanked: she literally has nothing to be thanked for, unlike Luna who controlled the moon.
 
She basically just sets out to grab power and be a bitch is all.

NACP’s music was super early fandom days and they did a set of songs all about Luna being this downtrodden, poor little pwincess etc.
 
Stuff like Lower The Moon and For The New Lunar Republic, the second one especially pretty much made NLR and Solar Empire stuff a “thing”
 
Also, back in those days, the music was a way bigger part of the fandom. It had a ton of impact because sites like EqD promoted music way more back then as well. It’s kinda like a butterfly effect.

She does briefly seem to look shocked, it’s just more subtle than in the animatic (then again, animatics do tend to be more exaggerated than the final product).

I liked it with the Season 4 animatics where during Luna’s transformation, she’s obviously panicked, like her plan to consort with the literal and malevolent forces of darkness was backfiring and only then realized it. It allows for her not being in control of herself during her stint as Nightmare Moon while at the same time keeping her responsible for the way things turned out.

Understand I’m being very broad with my definitions and defining what I see other people as doing. I honestly felt that the explanation at the time did not justify her actions in the least and has in fact set a precedent for the ridiculously skewed priorities this show has lain out, with characters who cause substantial collateral damage, endanger lives, and bring about the apocalypse are more forgivable than everyday jerks because the former have some mild Freudian Excuse.
 
It’s just that Sunset Shimmer doesn’t even have the Freudian Excuse.

Yeah, Luna’s back story is “gets jealous of her sister, goes mad with power.”

Well, that is how it happened, so Twilight is right on this one. Sunset clearly deserves the cold shoulder we see her getting in EQG:RR. BUT, I like Sunset more than I like Twi. So…
 
Yeah, my sympathies still lie with Sunny-sun. I’d much rather see her taking the long road to redemption than yet another Twilight-is-better-than-all-of-us showcase.
