As I was saying in another comment, I don’t think Earth Ponies use magic the same way unicorns do. Earth Pony magic is probably the same thing as Zecora’s magic, based on magical potions and brews. They’re still Earth Ponies, after all, so they still have to work with the limits set upon Earth Ponies. I mean, if an Earth Pony had a special talent for flying, would they be able to levitate? Or, would it be more plausible that they’d just be good with flying contraptions?

Earth Pony Magic is fairly misinterpreted so much that even the writers don’t do jack with it, yeah?

Earth ponies can be great, even superior at medicinal, herbal-type magic related to natural ingredients. They can’t levitate a spoon through sheer will or fire bolts of magical force.

That seems highly unlikely. It would trivialize the racial differences between the pony tribes, rendering their differences entirely cosmetic, and also disadvantage unicorns whose only advantage over other tribes is their ability to use magic, similar to pegasi having flight and earth ponies having a natural connection to the land.
 
A unicorn, for example, could not have the gift of flight without first being a gifted magician, and an Earth Pony has all the flying power of a rock. The only exception comes in the form of technology and similar outside sources, so I assume the same for Earth Pony sorcerers. The pony tribes may use skills associate with other tribes, but they still work with the limits set upon their tribe.

A guy on my DA has been arguing at length that because Meadowbrook has the “Mage” title (or name?) that this means earth ponies can use the exact same type of magic as unicorns…

At first I was confused as to how an Earth Pony could use magic as unicorns are specifically stated to be the only ponies who can use magic, but then it made sense when I realized she seemed to use magic the same way Zecora does; through potions and powders.

If she usually wore a mask, then that would explain why ponies assumed she was a unicorn. They automatically assumed, magic = horn.

Actually one of the main line comics is supposedly a sequel of sorts to this with Fluttershy and Twilight searching for a panacea in Meadowbrooks notes. Would be cool if both of these stories is a setup for how they find Zecora’s cure.

Crazy. Just looking at the art, I’d assumed that her mask was some kind of tribal thing.  
It looks like I was wrong - it’s the equestrian equivalent of a Plague Doctor mask.

Her disease is incurable, so I am 100% convinced she will be healed by meadowbrook…or maybe the mane 6 will inherit the traits or spirits of these legendary ponies.

Isn’t one of the upcoming episodes about Zecora falling ill?

Unless you intentionally paint it as a widespread historical inaccuracy.
