Haha, I’ve seen some fanarts of Rabia also with a fancy cloak and regalia. I guess opulence must be in Umbrum nature, that’s why they want to take over the Crystal Empire so bad!
 
(Also, in my headcannon, his mother is not Rabia and is actually a random Umbrum whom she has taken her son from, in order to use for her cause. Rabia is the leader of the Umbrums who plan to break from their prison. She talks to both Sombra and Hope to form a bond and take advantage of them. This is roughly speaking, there is more to it)

Hmmmm… Emperor Sombra shrugs off Twilight’s magic blast that hits him right in the torso, so he must be wearing some aswell. But this was after his ascention, and if his personal room in the Crystal Tower is of any indication, what with all the books and busts, he must have had time to assemble some real protection. Then again, when he reforms he keeps a more basic form of his outfit so idunno lol.
 
Now that you’ve mentioned Sombra shapeshifting, what if he could still transform into his “true” form? Dark magic is powered by rage, so when he gets angry, it would awaken his Umbrum side? Let’s say, him getting “purified” was his dark side being sealed within him. That would be kinda cool!

Unless…what if the “Umbrum illusion” armor is just cosmetic and doesn’t actually provide any protection? So Good King Sombra actually does wear a full suit of armor! It’s possible haha

Interestingly, in Reflections, Good King Sombra is shown removing his coat and exposing his body armour underneath. It is also shown that in his wardrobe he posseses a heavier crown and a neckpiece, which he puts on in the final scene of #19, where he talks to Twilight about her princesshood and preparing to make a final stand against Mirrorverse Celestia. They’re more akin to Umbrum Emperor Sombra’s, with the crown coming down to his nose and armour covering his neck. Unfortunately, he doesn’t seem to wear them in #20, reverting to his lighter forehead singlet and neck band that holds some sort of cravat. I assume it’s an artist’s inconsistency.

I just assumed his mom gave him a super fashionable cloak off-screen to plunder the crystal heart with. Your idea is way less silly.

My theory is that the clothing and armor he wears is some sort of umbrum illusion, where he created materials from nothing!  
Why I assume this is due to the fact he can turn into shadow and the clothing goes with him, and when he reforms to his physical self, so does the clothing. I don’t think it’s a spell that turns clothing he had into shadow with him, because his horn doesn’t glow when switching forms, which makes me assume it’s umbrum magic of some kind.

I wonder where he gets his coats from? Apparantly accepting his fate as an Umbrum also blessed him with a black and purple trimmed hooded one. And his signiature red one, of course.

Yes! Any Sombra is good Sombra! Umbrum Sombra, Young Pony Sombra, Emperor Sombra, Boyfriend Sombra, Reformed Sombra, Good King Sombra, whatever! Handsome, inteligent, confident, charming, loving, caring, slightly thick.

But of course. “Prince” Sombra is totally not drawn enough. My only gripe is, I think his jaw is sharper, here he looks a bit… androgenous? Unless that’s intentional.
