It was BP #17 who called it “awful”, not me.

My #1 hope for G5 is the flip side of my top worry about the writing. The movie provided so many subtle character cues that it has the potential to feel far more real than FiM if it’s followed through. What I worry about is if they’re ignored in favor of giving each pony as distinctive of a personality as possible. Izzy, Zipp, and Sunny each being a different shade of loner feels more “real” than the balanced archetypes of G4’s M6. Let’s have more than the smart one, the tomboy, the quiet one, the girly girl, the other tomboy, and unmedicated ADHD. To be fair, FiM’s characters being pure archetypes who each embody a specific Element of Harmony meant that their personalities were clearly established in two 22-minute episodes (especially since the Everfree presented a challenge unique to each of the five ponies Twilight met).
ANG, on the other hoof, never really established roles for each pony. They all had personalities (and better group dynamics than S1E02 of FiM), but Pipp was just kind of there. Because they had more subtle personalities than distilled archetypes, it became harder to write a scene that would uniquely introduce each pony. FiM started pre-Flanderized and the joy of early seasons was exploring the depth of the ponies (until they became re-Flanderized in later seasons).
Ways I could see G5 following through on the small personality details:
  1. Just Flanderize them. Izzy, Hitch, and Pipp are at the greatest risk of this.
  2. They have a specific curriculum they want to teach little girls and the episode synopses are already written. If they can touch on these touching moments, great, but including them is not a priority.
  3. These small interactions are the core of the show or at least shape the main stories told.
Directly to your point about Pipp’s insecurities: perhaps she’s equally as uncomfortable with fake flying as her sister. Each performance is an opportunity for a power surge that strands her in the sky. Real flight would allow her to continue the show under her own wingpower.
That gif is amazingly cute.

that have led her down this path of wanting to be loved by everypony
When you put it like that… everyone fell in love with a murderous robot wolf lady because she has major insecurity issues and breaks down sobbing after being unable to catch a bratty human kid.

The internet revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the pegasus race.

Exploring how Pipp’s parasocial friendships leave her equally as lonely as Sunny, Izzy, and Zipp would be a surprisingly deep theme for MLP. I support this idea in the fullest.
This is a really late response but, as a huge fan of Pipp Petals, this would be a FANTASTIC theme!
Consequently, it could lead the audience into believing that the staff members are trying to reinforce the classic Gen X + Millennial “social media bad” viewpoint, but, as somebody who is a member of very early Gen Z (2001), it’s absolutely true that social media can negatively impact a person’s psyche and view of the world…
I mean, heck, have you seen the sheer amount of censorship online these days? The little kids who are glued to their iPads every second of every day? The people who rely on social media only to formulate their supposedly own opinions? Social media can be good, but it can also be very bad– and, in the case of Pipp Petals, it has turned her into a semi-narcissistic and greedy pegasus. If the other characters can somehow convince Pipp that not everything should be about social media and being “popular”, it would be huge character development for her… we’ve already seen how much her personality changed when she was traveling with the other main characters rather than being on her phone in Zephyr Heights, so I’m certain we can explore this even more.
Deep down, there’s a kind, loving, and generous pony, but she has very clear insecurities (perhaps being considered “lesser” than her twin sister? Being short? A little chubby? Feeling like her mother only loves her because of how she brings fame?) that have led her down this path of wanting to be loved by everypony. I see a lot of myself in her… I too have resorted to trying to be really big on social media due to my own insecurities… I know deep down that I’m not the only girl out there who feels this way. Pipp could teach us all a very, VERY important lesson about self-confidence in today’s age of technology!
I’m not sure if I’m making sense, but I just wanted to give my two cents– err, bits!

After a lot of her development Rarity becamse best pony in the alot of peoples eyes. The only difference between them and I is that Rarity was always best pony from season 1 (though she was tied with Twilight during that time, and Rarity became de facto best pony during Season 2)
GadenKerensky

Her only real trait is being an E-Girl/Influencer.
And that’s not a personality trait. So I’m not surprised she’s not popular, she doesn’t have much substance. All the other characters have some amount of depth to them.
Even Hitch was a little more than just ‘there’.
Background Pony #5231
Honestly I’m not too surprised, of all of them she feels a bit underdeveloped, at least for now.
I feel like she’s in a similar situation to the one Rarity was in back when FiM first began. People forget that her initial appearances were a bit underwhelming compared to other characters on the show, and that she was not as well liked right away. But once they started fleshing her out more, her standing improved considerably. Pipp could easily go the same way.

Actually I think that new poll is not asking “your favourite character”, is about “who’s the best character in the movie” instead. I guess fandom may still like Pipp, but sadly she didn’t have big development in the movie, so that’s the poll results.

No surprise there. Pipp was hyped up in the promo material and then turned out to be a completely extraneous character to the plot and to have an annoying personality on top of it.
Plot spoilers below:
She brings the group the crystal that they dropped and only tags along because she’d rather not be captured by an angry mob. Her claim to fame was being able to “fly”. Restoring the magic to Equestria would let every pegasus fly and make her “ability” not special in the slightest. Sunny, Izzy, and Zipp all have a solid reason for travelling together. Pipp and Hitch are just sort of there.
Railershy

Pipps my fave too. I always tend to lean to the less popular ones it seems. Fave 3 from G4 are Fluttershy, Cadance, and Marble Pie.
