Mega Venasaur :P it has thick fat, it takes half damage from fire and ice but Meganium actually does have the sp.def to take it if I remember right

I always go with Water. Because, let’s face it, there isn’t a single grass starter that can take an ice beam to the face.

Gym 8: Techincally Immune
 
Squirtle

Gym 4: Weak, but can pick up Ice Beam (I am going off Red/Blue/Yellow since I can’t remember Leafgreen that well, but if you don’t get Ice Beam from the guy by the vending machine than just Weak)  
Gym 5: Nothing  
Gym 6: Nothing  
Gym 7: Super Effective  
Gym 8: Super Effective
 
and I view the beginning as the more challenging part since the later in the game it is the easier it is to get pokemon to offshoot the weaknesses of your starter

me too…gym 4-7 are very difficult for bulbasaur. charmander may have it rough for the first 2 gyms but is better for the later more difficult gyms.

I never really had a problem with his, it was Bulbasaur that gave me a tough time.

Charmander is the ‘hard mode’ of First Gen, literally being weak to the first 2 gyms and having a terrible typing since 4th gen came around  
it is Squirtle > Bulbasaur > Charmander

Scootmander, Bloomasaur, and Sweetle.
