It’s a real shame that you would have to write that.

After all, the whole thing that got this current series off the ground is that it was actually not atrociously written, especially compared to the alarmist initial reviews, and a lot of the other content airing alongside it.

That the writers are allowing themselves to slide into comfortable but dull literary traps is an unfortunate sentiment, especially if true.

@Ping_chan
There is a lot of truth in that, but in the context of Season 3 and 4, there’s a big difference between ‘attention’, and ‘focus and importance’. Also there’s a third issue of ‘required attention’.

In other words, it isn’t about the simple issue of fitting in stuff.

Let me explain…

Rarity’s issue in S3 was character ‘attention’. There was not enough episodes and storylines for her character to further develop. That’s not saying much considering how short Season 3 was, but it was still noticible, especially to people who consider her their favorites.

Twilight’s issue in S3 and S4, on the other hand, wasn’t ‘attention’, it was ‘focus.’

‘Focus’, especially in the long run, is a far more dangerous tool. In the short, episodic run, its fine. However with Twilight, they have been placing so much focus on Twilight, especially in world-needs-saving roles, that the other Main characters are often treated as minor side characters. Too often for the fanbase to feel comfortable…they don’t like seeing their favorite characters, or main characters in general, be treated as inferior or meaningless when compared to her. Not only was it a recurring theme in S4, we have Crystal Empire, MMC, Equestria Girls, Princess Twilight Sparkle, and Twilight’s Kingdom…all that segregate the other Main Charachter’s importance. That’s a long time for the fanbase to feel unsettled.

Then there is ‘required attention’. This pertains to Celestia and Luna. We want to see more of these characters, we want to see what goes on in their heads on a casual basis…but over 4 seasons, the writers have been keeping them at arm’s length. Think about that. They are making the biggest decisions in MLP, but they are so distant in the show.

As I writer, I’m afraid I recognize the reasoning. : ( Its a type of bad writing to elevate the elder protagonists and keep their motivations at arm’s length so they can be ‘the voice of the author.’ So long as we don’t know them personally like we know the Mane 6, Spike and the CMC…its hard to question their actions and decisions. IDW is doing their best to rectify that, and for some cowardly reason DHX is giving them permission to rectify A LOT while they do the same thing over and over again in the series.

Would it kill them to have one or two episodes where Celestia and Luna have the spotlight and are able to talk on an informal basis? No. But it would remove their trump card in the series.

In the comics, IDW Twilight has actually started questioning the decisions Celestia has been making for her own life, and started thinking for her own asperations disregarding Celestia. That is a milestone in character development the series may NEVER want to reach if they want to milk Celestia’s ‘word of the author’ role for as long as possible.

Pretty soft for a Sony.
@CronoM
I guess the end result is that there is too much content for either IDW or DHX to fit into their normal published media.
Also the fans will always be biased towards their favorite and against their least favorite ponies.
Its like all the people who think too much time is spent on Twilight Sparkle and not enough on say Rarity.
While season 3 brushed over Rarity, season 4 gave her lots of attention.
Its a battle that I don’t think the writers will ever win. :p

@bingo77
Its likely this arc is longer then most arcs since there is so much time between now and the new season.

Besides, on the opposite end, if they just brushed over Celestia’s romance, it would do her an injustice since she’s had no real episodes to herself and this really humanizes her greatly with Good Sombra and Star Swirled the Bearded.

@soundtea

agreed. COME ON. how do you screw this plotline up that badly? we should have the evil mane six fighting each other and arguing over why they chose to be good/evil, not focusing on Goodbra and Celestia’s crappy romance.

@Hypastpist
I picture Chrysalis’ voice (Barr still voicing her and whatnot, hypothetically speaking), but minus the elements that made her voice so creepy, in the show. Plus in maybe a tone that is more warming/lovable, rather than the vicious/frightening one Chrissy had.

The amount of Reversalis seen so far in the comics is disappointing as is the amount of evil Cadance.

Seeing how the love story with Shining Armor plays out is such a better story.
