I’ve heard both explanations for years. Still not sure which one is true. We’ll probably never know for certain unless the actual animator who put it there comes forward about it.

Hmm… You know… I remember reading somewhere that Derpy’s crossed eyes in the first episode were actually NOT the result of an animation error, but rather the animator in charge of the scene did that as a joke.
