Battleships are too clunky and too big for today’s combat tactics.
The battleship served as a tank/support role during the past wars, but a destroyer can do more damage and be on the assault AND still establish a support role all at once.
With the way the world works, putting hands on a battleship would only paint a slow moving target. One good torpedo or cruise missile and the battleship would have the be abandon.
It’s also a needless amount of money for such a big ship. Too many guns to arm, too many munitions to supply. The money would be better spent on 3-4 destroyers.

The reason battleships aren’t coming back is simple: they’re too vulnerable. Battleships had their height when air power was still hard to project over long distances, but their death as a viable combat vessel was made clear by the sinking or crippling of the great German battleships by aircraft, and set in stone by the attack on Pearl Harbour. It no longer made sense to mount all your armaments on a battleship when you could have them fly to the enemy instead.
