This is why I somewhat like (only somewhat) the germanic languages. The definite article, at least in Swedish, is a suffix to the noun rather than being a separate word. _*Den_* or _*det_* acts as more of an intensifier than an article. _*Den källingen_* is _*that_* kitten or _*this_* kitten, rather than _*the_* kitten, which is only _*källingen_*.
