Indeed, though if I had to pick a favorite out of the three I mentioned, it would easily go to “I’m With You”. It’s the perfect mix of teen angst with a great delivery backed up by a nice pop punk production. It’s one of my favorite songs from the decade and a reminder of why 2003 was a great year for music.

I think the joke of Mario and Luigi’s last name also being “Mario” in the Super Mario Bros. Movie is actually pretty clever.

I think most “there are no villains” stories fail because they try too hard to make everyone a good person deep down.
- There are truly evil humans in the world, and pretending that there aren’t is foolishness that has likely gotten people killed (or worst).
- Embracing the gray is needed. Think of that old Lorax cartoon (the one before the live action movies). The antagonist keeps on justifying to himself and the Lorax that what he’s doing is right, and that the idea of a compromise arrives far too late to save the plants. Just ideas and motives going too far, both in terms of harm and unwilling to harm, is a great way to make an antagonist sympathetic, but still a great villain.

I personally dislike it when the characters that are supposed to be heroes do morally questionable things just for the sake of having gray morality rather than because it makes sense for the plot or the characters.

That’s just bad writing. It shouldn’t be too hard to make the protagonist in a reasonable situation where they question how far their willing to go to protect others (the limits of how far people are willing to that the “needs of the many outweighs the needs of the few” ideology).
