Things I would’ve changed about the game while still keeping the whole “revenge is bad” theme;
Play as Abby early on, maybe even before reintroducing Ellie and Joel. Make her likeable and show her journey to the crossroads. Make it seem as if she’s a new protagonist.
Don’t start with revenge. Not yet. Let revenge be at the back of her mind, but make the mission more of a scouting or long expedition in search of survivors and resources. Don’t have it as the sole motivator. It won’t work.
Have Abby interact with Ellie in a nice way. They both don’t know each other so have them be friends or something before the eventual reveal.
When she does kill Joel, have her show remorse. Make her realize that Ellie, who was watching, was so full of hate and anger at her. Make Abby fucking human.
Abby leaves with the rest but back at base, she starts having second doubts and goes off her own. That helps humanize her and gives us a reason to feel sorry for her, despite what she did. Because humans make mistakes.
So far, Ellie’s section is okay except for the flashbacks. Never be dependent on flashbacks. Just have it play before Joel’s death so it paces better.
In the final confrontation, show how much Ellie has changed because of Abby’s decision and make it so that Abby won’t try to kill Ellie due to guilt and Ellie, when given the chance, refused because of her own while keeping her fingers.

Pretty much. Even with the current cast, the story can be way better. But Druckmann and his annoying ego just won’t let it, and of course he’d insult anyone who thinks otherwise.
Good writers can make good stories out of anything, even literal trash fires.

Not really Games related, but it does show the “Righteous” side’s true colors when the espouse wanting the same thing as their hated enemy.
