You can actually run on the tree "ceilings" in the temple forest maze area too of the Mystic Ruins, which is fun.

I agree, Nintendo actually gives developers alot of freedom. Some try to spread rumors (like Larry Bundy of Youtube) they didn't work well with Rare or Argonaut, but that's not true, and they gave Rare lots more freedom & funding then Microsoft did.
