Yeah, but the overall tone of the movie was very different, though I did like a lot of the subtle references. There was apparently an earlier draft that was much closer in tone to the games, and even some concept art for the movie we actually got where King Koopa actually looked like his game counterpart, but it was shelved.
 
Although looking back, the earlier draft probably wouldn't have worked in live-action back in 1993.
