Making characters rather than mouthpieces tend to be a strong start. Won’t stop people from acting like a character anything other than a brain dead bimbo is “woke,” but their reactions are out of your hands.

It’s treated as a buzzword for any character who isn’t a straight white male with no mental oddities and an average salary. It’s very much overused and abused. What it’s suppose to mean is trying too hard to pander to people outside “the norm” (women, black people, autistic people, gay people, you get the idea). Like Black Christmas 2019.

That’s a pleasant way of looking at it, but being aware of such things isn’t alone enough to be woke. It’s most to do with what one does with this info.

Namely pseudo-moralism forced on others as a method of dealing with historical wrongs, both real and wildly imagined.

Black Christmas 2019 comes to mind with that last part (a movie where the founder of the university posses the guys to murder gals because said founder couldn’t stand women having a decent education). Kind of makes the problem of unequal education look like a joke when treated that way (trying to empower it and turning it into a train wreck).

Being “woke” is not, and never will be, a bad thing.

The problem is that a certain group of people have co-opted that term and turned it into an excuse to complain about anything that doesn’t star a white cisgender heterosexual male character.

I disagree about it never being bad, like Marvel’s attempt with adding “woke” super heroes or Black Christmas 2019. It can be used very poorly, though that doesn’t excuse people calling anything that doesn’t fit what they think should be the norm as “woke” because they don’t like the sex/ethnicity/sexual orientation/etc…

The problem with those weren’t that they were “woke.” It’s that they were just straight up bad.

The former was an incredibly tone-deaf business decision by Marvel that was basically just the living embodiment of what anti-SJWs thought “being progressive” actually was, and the backlash from both sides was severe enough for Marvel to just shadow drop the mini-series onto digital services and pretend it never happened.

The latter was just the result of unfortunate implications.

They were both trying to be woke, or at least appeal to that crowd. Being “woke” isn’t knowing and understanding discrimination or inequality, it’s about how you handle it. That’s why I say using characters as mouth pieces is a bad form of being “woke.” And I’ve seen reviews of Black Christmas 2019. Unfortunate implications is the least of that movie’s issues (especially when the original did a better job handling the issue of inequality and toxic gender roles).
