Because Ronald Reagan made Republicans feel good. It did not matter if the US ends up a second world dump. As long as the Republicans gives a sweet little shout out to them and own the libs.
Its a sad reality that many Republican voters don't care about politics and just want things done. The refusal to hold their party accountable allows the GOP to act withoutwithout caution or dignity. If you want the Republican party to change you are going to have to get those disenfranchised Republican voters to care and that means bringing them into the fold.
