I saw it more as they’re trying to do traditional stuff they do. Though it’s implied they don’t correspond as it’s been shown several times. At this point, she’s wayyy closer to Twilight than the rest, and even then, she’s only close to Twilight because she’s basically her caretaker, and given her a completely new, better life, so she feels obligated to do whatever Twilight says, even when she doesn’t agree. She does bond with Twilight over magic but that’s pretty much it. Her bond with Trixie is significantly better, but as one of the season 8 leaked summaries show, even her bond with Trixie might not work out; I take it this episode foreshadows that, since Starlight has almost no physical prowess, and apparently travelling with Trixie will cause some strife between them. Her bond with Maud is “we’re comfortable with each other without saying anything” but she’s shown to be that way with Twilight and even Trixie even if it hasn’t been pointed out. So far her friendship with Sunburst seems the most natural even if there’s still work to be done with it.
Though I gotta say, I really liked the new intro part where Starlight happily trots with Twilight, in front of the castle, almost playful. It was cute, you don’t see her acting that way too often.
