I feel the series does best with a nice balance of both. SA2 is super popular for a reason, it has a nice balance in the story and settings with serious and silly. The story takes itself seriously, but it doesn’t forget that it’s a Sonic game, and has the occasional silly moment, but it also doesn’t make fun of itself at every turn either. It’s a good balance.

I agree, the series needs balance. Though, most feel SA2 was less balanced, and more “dark,” then “light-hearted/corny,” some blaming it for the series getting too dark. Still, as you said, it still had it’s humorous, silly, and corny moments. (Like say Shadow petting chao, and scoffing.) So some need to take another look at that game before demonizing it for the “edge.”
 
Now ironically though, some think the series is getting too silly/meta, and poking fun at itself too much, and wanting serious edgy moments to come back. So they perhaps need to balance it a bit. The Forces trainers seem to show Forces is bringing some edge back, but with lighter things too.

I’m really curious to see what Forces does with it’s story. It would be pretty hard to just slap Silver, Shadow, Chaos, etc into it without any explaining.

Yes, that’s the one I was thinking of. Apparently she would’ve been named “Madonna.”

Also, for some reason the American artwork for the Genesis games insisted on making Sonic and the other characters look “edgier”. Robotnik in particular had his sunglasses replaced with blank, black eyes for some reason.

I actually really liked the old school westernized Sonic/Tails/Robotnik/etc designs like on the boxart, the animation and the early comics. I just have a huge weakness for brown Tails and mohawk Sonic and wish that the designs weren’t entirely erased from history and neo-classic merch. But I’m weird.

Tails being brown was only in the cartoons and comics though. The Western box-arts still depicted him as orange.

For the record, I quite liked the Western Sonic artwork myself, I just never understood why they felt the need to do it.
 
And it’s still better than some of Mega Man’s Westernized artwork… (I’m not talking about the Mega Man 1 and Mega Man 2 boxart by the way)

I see those looks very outdated, since I can see them coming from the 90s.  
Characters with that cartoony look IMO don’t fit well in our modern era.  
I mean, just look at Duke Nukem, I still see him trapped in the 90 and doesn’t evolve for some reason.

Geez, it’s 2017, not 1991.

For some UNKNOW reason, HOOTERS is with Sonic Forces…

Sadly, and I’m sorry for going off-topic for a bit, but the Hooters in my town closed six years ago. Replaced with White Castle.
