The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

Allowing anons to upload keeps an influx of fresh images. But at the same time it’s prone to be abused. In the past I’d say no, but I can’t take the death of another booru again. The best would be to enforce the use of accounts, but allow posting anonymously within the account.

See now you’re speaking my language. That makes it specific, and relevant to the person. And best of all it makes it manual, not putting it up to automation where problems can arise. And of course, rather then adding on a new system, its refining the down vote system to utilize a filtering mechanism. Do more with less.

Perhaps a satisfactory alternative would be to auto-hide images that you downvoted. Since the site gives you a list of the images that you upvoted, then implementing the inverse shouldn’t be too hard. Of course, to avoid accidental downvotes, there should also be a voting confirmation dialog box.

Fallen, by your metric maybe, but not by mine. I think its needless and therefore useless. I.e. it adds no good for which to outweigh the bad.

Fallen, and if said users don’t, or if not enough try? Take a locked door with 3 locks on it, yea another couple of locks would add protection…but would also add unnecessary inconvenience and could lead to other problems. Don’t throw more stuff on the system, just refine and improve the existing systems.

@Zincy But by only hiding them instead of outright deleting them, it’s still possible to vote them back up since some users will still be able to see them and decide if they should be voted back up.
Yeah, the system isn’t perfect, but it’s not that bad either.

Fallen, I’d still say no, and here’s why. Once again it comes down to the unspecific nature of system. What if I want to see something, but its been neg bombed by trolls/haters/concerned twats. The key to good filtering is specifics, not generalities. A catch-all does just what it says, catches all, even stuff you don’t want it to. The filters work fine, don’t through more useless guff into it.

@Wingbeat That’s actually a pretty good idea, letting users block images with a low score instead of deleting them. Anyone else agree with this guy?

that’s what the mods are for! we lacked mods on ponibooru but at least we tagged the pictures with “not pony related”, we could just do the same here, also anonymous is not really bad, sometimes he brings some good moments.

One comment I may add to the suggestion on auto-culling downvoted things is to add the ability to search (or hide) by score. Ie. score<0, score:3, something like that.

Just to clarify: I can’t speak for the entire rest of the admin team but I personally have strong feelings about the importance of anonymous contribution and I will never be in support of any suggestion that restricts anonymous users from contributing on a permanent basis. The current state of affairs is just a stopgap measure due to some technical problems.

The “Post Anonymously” options are not completely anonymous and the database still stores the identity of the post’s author, it’s just hidden from regular users if that flag is checked. Mod/Admins can still see who the actual uploader of an image is (the comments display stuff is still in development but nonetheless that’s just a display issue, the database is fine).

@BGPony The next logical step would be to disable that feature as well, or alter it so that it only hides the username from anons and other users but not the mods.
@Nickel Trolls will do anything to get their way, I thought everyone knew this by now.

@Background Pony: Sure, but wouldn’t it leave a trace in the DB that could be tracked by the admins? I mean, is that “Post Anonymously” button truly anonymous? I have no idea how the DB is designed so I might be way out in left field here.
