I see both.
That she was so insecure and desperate that she had convinced herself that what she was doing was the best for everyone. Not realizing both the harm it was causing as well as not noticing her own inner motivations.

That’s where we differ; you seem to assume genuine altruism, but I see insecurity and desperation to never be alone again written all over her actions, when taking the s5 finale into account. (Seriously, she was really quick to make friends with ponies she absolutely hated mere hours earlier.)

She may have convinced herself that she was convinced that cutie marks are the root cause of strife and falling out, but they were ultimately just a convenient scapegoat.

The secrecy and dishonesty reveal that she (possibly subconsciously) wanted to either fit in despite being “special”, or rule the peasants from on high. Or a bit of both.

A short summary is enough when it’s literal insight into those who created the character and it states that she actually believes what she says.

It’s a brief note for script purposes on one (double) episode – it’s essentially a first impressions cue card.
It would be folly to take it at face value.

Not only are you assuming she could do that,

Like how you assume that she’d “equalize” herself eventually, eh? ;)

I did point out the possibility that it might not be possible, and

Well of course she would emphasize her importance to their (previously shared) goal of equality, since they were betraying her, and she wanted to remind them why they shouldn’t do that. She was feeling rejected after dedicating so much of her life to making ponies like them happy. Her entire rant was based on the fact that she sincerely believed that she was giving them true harmony, and that they were rejecting that.

A short summary is enough when it’s literal insight into those who created the character and it states that she actually believes what she says. It doesn’t need to be more than that.

Not only are you assuming she could do that, and that she had thought of it before, but it’d be a massive hassle for no real actual gain.

She spent years of her life working on her project in order to make everyone happier, and then after a single day, some strangers came in and made them start rejecting her philosophy (which she really thought was for the betterment of all). She was feeling rejected and unappreciated, so of course she’d get angry.

Such as her getting more pissed off at having her way of life looked down on than for having her plans foiled, out-of-show blurbs saying that she actually believes in her philosophy, her backstory heavily suggesting that she actually did think different talents led to misery after Sunburst left, her showing no real desire for personal power for its own sake, etc.

Only because she felt that she couldn’t advance her agenda to make everyone equal if she did not do so.

It was established that cutie marks can be returned to their owners; she could have simply taken it out of storage to “equalize” kids or new converts when necessary.

Now, there is a possibility the spell can’t be cast on oneself, which would present a nontrivial hurdle to work around, but that doesn’t explain or excuse the false pretense.
