There are two outcomes: Exactly that, or The M6 are shafted and Starlight, Trixie, Discord, Thorax, Maud,  
Lightning Dust/Daring Do, and the foal from Marks and Recreation become the new Mane Seven

More likely Starlight’s story will more or less wrap up this season and the mane 6 will be given some new task that’ll be the main plotline for a season or two. Hell the CMC might end up taking a more pivitol role in a two-parter at some point (long overdue of you ask me). Starlight’s story is only a chapter in the overall series, not the new overall plotline. That just makes more sense to me.

There kind of is a need. They will still be around but they can no longer sustain sole spotlight.

Here’s a prediction: there isn’t going to be a “starlight 6” because the show has absolutely no intention of replacing the mane 6 because there’s absolutely no need to.

As much as I would like to see Ember help save Equestria, I don’t think I could stand an entire episode (or two) of Starlight talking in “bro”.

Number one: I could totally see Gilda and Maud getting along due to the rock connection, PLUS one tie-in book tells us she already knows Trixie.

If Starlight is forming her own elements, Discord and Thorax would not be part of this group. She already has 2, she needs 3 more ponies. Most likely 2 pegasus and another earth pony. Lightning Dust has been speculated to make a redemption and be part of this team so that leaves 1 more pegasus pony and 1 more earth pony.
 
As for who Spike would be, its clearly Sunburst. He will be the sole male member, left behind all the time and has a connection with Starlight the same way Spike did with Twilight. The dynamic would be slightly tweaked to be responsible older bro and impulsive younger sis instead of the original OCD older sis and voice of reason younger bro dynamic.

I’m more Interested in zecora and Trixie. Imagine Zecora trying to Yoda Trixie the way she Did Twilight back in magic duel. Plus, Zecora still has Trixie’s alicorn amulet. Thats a plot thread I’d like to see get picked up.

I totally agree. Discord only worked in the S6 finale because we felt his anguish that Fluttershy had been kidnapped and the whole “magical changeling hive blocks magic” bit. That’s why he would be like a wild card. Not part of the main team, so to speak, but able to come in when shit has really hit the fan to lend his powers. It would be tricky to do right, but it is a possibility.

Honestly I’d prefer not to have Discord, the writers could fall into the trap of using him as an all-purpose problem solver.

Also, while you are correct that it is the most likely that they will represent the three subspecies equally and that it is good, how about some even better representation? Adding a zebra, or a griffon, or a dragon, or a changeling makes the world even more diverse. Obviously the name will always be “My Little Pony” since Hasbro has copyrights to maintain, but the whole point of the S6 finale was to show that a rag-tag team of unlikely heroes can still save the day. This would just be a continuation of that.

I’m gonna deviate from the topic for a moment and say that those are the best descriptions of Thorax and Discord I’ve read so far.
 
With that out of the way, I’m up for the 2 of each kind of pony, but if they’re planning to diversify then I’m ok with that too, which I think would be a good idea. Twilight’s group has already done the 2 of each already, and the variety would make the difference between her group and Starlight’s a bit more evident, lest Starlight be confused for a second Twilight.
