I followed Hadvar after he escorted me to the keep (he also said "follow me" so I thought I had to) but I still ended up joining the stormcloaks later on first playthrough, never made that mistake again, after wining the war with them I immediately regret it. So now I always follow Hadvar and stay on his side.
