Oh I completely agree, the war is easily hand waved away in the game. That wise man quote I mentioned earlier even parodied how pointless the game made it and just said "I'll join the fuck both your factions faction".
Mods help supplement the battles and what not but the vanilla game didn't give you much to work with, though it becomes pretty obvious the stormcloaks suck.
