Serene Tempest is the youngest daughter of Luna and Tempest Shadow, and Tempest’s only daughter. She was created through magic, so was born an alicorn with great potential and power. (Luna used a gender spell to turn into a stallion until Serene was conceived, thanks to Stygian’s help)
Due to being born alicorn like her sister, Nightfly saw this as more of a rival feature than a likewise friendly one. She liked being the special one, the only one born a Royal Alicorn. Serene never saw Nightfly’s sneers as hate, she knew it would take some time to get used to her. Serene followed Nightfly around whenever she could, despite Nightfly trying everything she could to upstage her or run from her.
She still loved her big sister and knew one day, Nightfly would love her too.
Serene discovered her destiny while she was asleep. She was in a dream being guided by her mother Luna, learning the ways of the dream realm and how to help ponies with calming and happy dreams. Serene loved fixing nightmares and seeing the relief on the ponies faces while they dream.. And when Serene woke up, her cutie mark had appeared. Luna passed down the duty of aiding ponies in their dreams to her.
With such an important role, Nightfly became envious of Serene’s destiny and felt inferior to her little sister. She was beautiful and wise, and everypony knew her and depended on her to be there to protect them in their slumber. Serene told their parents of Nightfly’s worries, and was the main reason they went out to her and reminded her just how important the stars were. Nightfly didn’t figure out it was Serene that asked them to do that until they were older, and that was the spark that started bringing the two sisters closer.
Like Vesper, she is one of the two siblings who help their parents address the Citizens of Canterlot during royal announcements. She doesn’t mind being the face of royalty, but she tries her best to pull Nightfly up beside her when they are out on the balcony; knowing her sister wants to be known but is too scared to put herself out there on her own.
