Yeah, Ocellus’ design is unfortunate. The eye wrinkle, her mane being translucent enough to make her look bald, the shape of her muzzle which is usually used for older characters, case in point:

That’s pretty much my point of view on this whole thing. I love the Mane 6 but variety is always nice.
 
I like the earlier seasons of the Simpsons and growing up I liked watching Hey Arnold and both shows would often jump between episodes involving the main cast as well as having episodes about other more minor characters once in a while.
 
I also really like this idea a lot. In the earlier episodes, Twilight and her friends were the students. They were learning lessons. Now they’re passing the torch and have become the teachers. It just feels so right that the latter end of the series, they’ve grown up so much and are now helping others to learn. Plus it’s nice to see another comparison between Twilight and Celestia given that Celestia also has her own school.

Sandbar: I like his overall color scheme and I love how they chose to make him an Earth Pony. A lot of people tend to gravitate towards Unicorns and Pegasi and it sometimes feels like Earth Ponies don’t get enough love sometimes so it’s nice to see them get attention. I wish his main coat color was white or a light shade of blue to go with his presumed ocean theme but I guess a light green isn’t half bad either.
 
Of the designs and new characters, he’s the one I like the least. (Don’t take that as a bad thing. I don’t hate him by any means, especially since I know nothing about his personality. But I just like seeing a bunch of non-pony characters get attention, especially considering this could mean more variety in future OCs. That would be nice.)
 
Silverstream: Probably the one I love the most at the moment. We got a bit of a glimpse of her seapony form a while back from a poor quality screenshot at Hascon. At first, I was worried about this meaning that the seaponies would stay under the sea and that meant we wouldn’t see any Hippogriffs in series but I’m so glad that’s not the case.
 
While I prefer how the Hippogriffs looked in the movie, I understand that they had to tweak their overall design to fit into the series a little bit more. The changes were minimal so that’s good. I wish her mane looked more feather like but can’t have everything I guess.
 
As for her, I love Hippogriffs, pastel colors, and pink, purple, and baby blue so this character hits all of my buttons design wise. She looks really endearing and sweet and I’m hoping she gets a lot of cute fanart in the future.
 
Yona: Probably my second favorite of the students so far. Yaks arguably aren’t my favorite (but that has less to do with them being Yaks or how their designed but how I didn’t really care for the episodes surrounding the Yaks). I’m with FrustrationInExcelsis here. I like how she’s different from previous Yaks we’ve seen so far. I also like how unlike the previous Yak’s we’ve seen, we can actually see her eyes.
 
Her pigtails are super adorable too. Speaking of them, it seems that she has another pigtail design.  
 
Maybe this one her pigtails are a bit too long that they get in the way, so she puts them in these neater ones so she doesn’t trip over her long hair or gets her hair caught up in things.
 
I did say how I wanted to see more bovines (both in canon and in series), so this is a step in the right direction for me.
 
Ocellus: I’m kind of with other people and think she looks a bit like a little old lady. I think had they gotten rid of those eye wrinkles and made her eyes rounder, we wouldn’t have made that mistake. Outside of that one complaint, I like her design.
 
I’m glad that they went with a more simple color scheme with her (because that was honestly the only problem I had with the Changedlings). So considering newer designs like Pharynx and hers seem to fix that problem seems like they’ve learned from their mistake of adding too many clashing colors at once.
 
I also like that her head has the little “mane”. I didn’t really like the idea of all of the Changelings outside of the leaders being completely bald. So the fact that some of them can have these crest-fin-thingys can add some variety in Changedling designs (the fact that they have a variety of colors already helped too).
 
Smoulder: I’m going to quote someone else but I think that someone at DHX really loves their orange and purple characters. Despite that joke, I really don’t mind this particular color scheme being used again (if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it). What I do mind is her rounded paw-like feet and hands. I wish they were more reptile-like and clawed.
 
I do like her horn fins too. They make her look distinct compared to the other dragons we’ve seen so far. They kind of remind me of a cartoon Viking helmet.
 
Gallus: I love griffons but I honestly wished they went with a more bird of prey look with him. That being said, I’m sure I can get used to his more colorful and tropical “macaw” like design within time. Honestly, his color scheme isn’t bad by any means. But I guess I just prefer griffons with more darker colors since that’s what we’ve been seeing for so long. I figured that Hippogriffs would be the ones with the more vibrant colors while Griffons had the more “predator” stealthy colors. It ain’t all too bad. One headcanon sunk isn’t the end of the world.

@Joshua There is no need to call the Mane 6 “dull”. I for one welcome the Student 6, but the Mane 6 are still the pulsing core of the whole series, and to me whoever comes to hate them for whatever reason, like it happened with several fans in the last year, it means they never loved them in the first place…
 
Besides, the show is on its sunset now, and the S9 will be the last, so, would you be a dear to let these characters getting the ending they deserve without being a jerk about them please? Live and let live.

Those are more detailed descriptions than I gave. And honestly, I see your points. I’m overall looking forward to seeing what the students have to bring to the table and who happens to voice them.

I’ve been doing some thinking because I apparently can’t help it, but it might have been neat to give him, say, a leopard back half. Maybe yellow with blue spots? Now that you bring up the macaw thing, it might even keep the tropical motif :D
 
Hmm… I’m going to have a bit of a busy week ahead of myself, but maybe that might be a fun theme to base a doodle or two off of this weekend…
