- Berry Patch began life in the slums of Las Pegasus born to a flaky disassociated mother who was gone half the time doing Celestia knows what. Berry Patch never knew her father. Ever since she was old enough to walk and talk Berry Patch was fending for herself most nights, only catching rare glimpses of her mother coming home sloppy drunk with a random different stallion every other night.
- Berry Patch’s mother never had any food to the house for the little filly to eat so Berry Patch got by by stealing food from markets, gardens, or even other homes. One night while she was trying to cook herself a Daisy and Raspberry Jam Sandwich her mother returned with yet another stallion. This stallion, however, gave the young Berry Patch a weird feeling. Putting the feelings out of her mind the filly ate her sandwich and went to bed. The next morning when Berry Patch woke up she decided that for breakfast she wanted a cupcake, but since those were in a glass case at the bakery she needed to swipe some bits from her mother. She crept into her mother’s room and the mare was still in her bed, all covered up in her blankets. Berry Patch swiped her mother’s bits and as she turned to leave the stallion from the other night returned with a weird black case and some garbage bags. Berry let out a terrified screech when the stallion tried to grab her and bolted between his legs and out the front door.
- The filly ran for what seemed like years. The lights from Las Pegasus grew fainter as she ran day and night–still convinced the stallion that hurt her mother was still chasing her. She was slowly making her way through the Equestrian countryside when all of a sudden she stumbled upon a small cottage nestled in an orchard of fresh apple trees. The cottage had a garden filled with plenty of ripe flowers, fruits, and vegetables–all right there for the taking. Berry Patch’s stomach roared in hunger as she bolted towards the vegetable patch, unknowingly knocking over a watering can and being completely oblivious to the light that appeared in one of the cottage windows. She only froze when a peach-colored colt appeared before her, shining a flashlight on her carrot-covered face. The colt must have felt bad for her, because he invited her inside. The cottage was night and cozy, much better than her mother’s house. The colt reappeared later with what Berry Patch presumed to be his parents. The father told his son to go back to bed while his mother gently placed one wing across Berry’s shoulders and started asking her about how she ended up on their carrot patch.
- Berry Patch figured she told a bad story for the next morning she was with the two adults, who introduced themselves as Big McIntosh and Fluttershy, at the police station. Berry Patch sat in between the two of them as they talked with the officer, who was throwing big words like “orphaned” and “homicide” and “serial killer” around. The officer agreed with the two Apples in front of him that Berry Patch would be safer here in Ponyville under their care rather than the orphanage back in Las Pegasus.
- Life with the Apples almost made Berry Patch feel… normal… as she got older. She never had to steal for food and got all the attention, regardless of how much it displeased her, from her new parents and two older siblings. Apple Flitter managed to worm her way into the teenager’s icy heart and is still one of the few friends Berry Patch actually has. After the birth of twins Gala Cream and Daffodil, Berry Patch actually started to warm up to her family–her horrible memories of what life was like before she met the Apples slipping away from her.
- Berry patch still lives at home with her parents, regardless of being grown, and works as a fruit vendor trying to make enough bits to some day get her own apartment.
I promise you she’s not going to be a villain–she’s just a grumpy kid
