To be fair they were known more for their local deeds than actually saving all of Equestria. Remember that Rockhoof was flat out doubted to even exist before AJ uncovered the tomb the villagers built.

Which is an interesting detail indeed. Stygian’s fear of being forgotten became a self-fulfilling prophecy. Wanting to be an “active” hero led to their falling out, which led to him turning evil, which led to them becoming legends… while his family was too ashamed to remember him.
