While they do try to get to the point where they can build more of themselves they aren’t that advanced yet.  
The most important resource for them is electricity though.
 
How valuable it is?  
Think about getting a perfectly working organ transplant. A new eye, a new leg.  
Stuff happens. Many need the one or other thing.
 
Would have been a nice turn, right?  
Maybe the robots could have destroyed humanity ~

at the point that functioning trade exists, I would hope the robos start looking into starting manufacturing back up again. the technology might be lost, but manufacturing for them is far more important than for ponies, where every female was a walking pony assembly plant.
 
matter of fact, how valuable is finding lost technology and robot designs that got buried in the rubble here?
 
also I think this is the first time joule’s mentioned that they were created by ponies. I was wondering for a while if there was gonna be a bait and switch here, where they got to the surface and reached the ruins of a human civilization.

Yeah, it’s a little similar, except that there are now that are alive here. Also different models from different companies.

This reminds me of the scene from Wall-E where our eponymous hero keeps a stock of spare parts he’s scavenged from his deceased “brothers” over the years.
