Well, maybe it has to do something about the need to be free of the pegasus.  
And many action/adventure stories start with the main character royally screwing up something. Still, quite stupid, yeah.

She knows nothing of the outside.  
She has lived in a stable her whole life, where she couldn’t fly.  
She has virtually no combat or survival skills unlike others like Blackjack.  
She has no weapons, armor or supplies of any kind.  
She knows nobody out there (Littlepip had).  
And she is a pegasus, which most ponies and griffons think are myths  
…
