So might I inquire to the backstory of this alternate future, how many decades has it been since the time of the Mane 6? This is obviously Spitfire now an old mare like Granny Smith.
 
So the “Ask Firestarter Spitfire” blog ends with the characters still roughly in the timeframe of the show, just after Concorde is born.
 
Flashback one has Concorde old enough to be in the astronaut program, so 30-40 years later, minimum. Note the sun was still out in that flashback.
 
Now, we’re in the present timeline for “Sunjackers.” Soarin has likely passed away and Spitfire isn’t doing well. Probably at least 10-20 years have gone by.

I suppose it’s also a time of Peace(?) as all the great evils have been defeated and/or vanquished?
 
I think the story now is about the evils we visit upon each other in the name of comfort and greed. That’s typically how cyberpunk dystopia stories work.

The most logical answer we can conclude with these slides alone is that the sun went out some time in the last 10 years. 10 years is the amount of time it takes for one’s hair to grey, and if we assume Spitfire’s hair starts to grey soon after the flashback ends we’re here now, at least 10 years later. We don’t have anything else to go off of, but it’s a start unless CaptainHoers wants to answer that question.

Isn’t it strange how this image feels more foreboding than its flashback alt? Not in a story sense, but in the colors. The first one is bathed in pale and cool blue colors, and the door’s window is screaming in black and red as well. Here it’s a nice, cozy, fireplace yellow, the door’s window is a much more muted and chill blue. But, with just a few facial features and context, the cozy, comforting role of yellow and the cold, lonely role of blue have switched roles.
