This is hardly furry confusion. That would be humanoids with non humanoids. Ones who do nothing but survive being treated as normal in the presence of those who thrive, and no one ever once entertains the thought of improving their lifestyle past “Just staying alive”. Eat, sleep, washup, repeat, mate every once in a while and finally die.
 
There’s no reason to think this is the case.

Non-sapient ponies and horses exist in G1. Meghan had one has a pet before she met Firefly. Granted My Little Pony Tales was a completely different thing to My Little Pony and Friends, but I wouldn’t be surprised if these horses weren’t sapient.
 
So I think the ape comparison that BP made could work for this situation.
