If someone starts to actively take your rights away, then respond to thier atack. But now, when the sytuation is at an impass, just stop pushing.
Again, homophobes are glorified bullies. Don't give them satisfation. You captured the point, now protect it.
They will not "push on themselves" because thier whole narrative rests on the idea that "Gays are attacking". If noone will be attacking, there will be no reason for "counterattack".
This will in turn separate "true homophobes" from people that just "go with the flow".
