Ehhh lame title, I know :’) It’s supposed to be the first part of the Sphinx’s riddle

I’m not sure why, but I looked up to see if Sphinx’s were a thing in the MLP world, and they were- I can’t believe I forgot the episode with that one Pillar who fights the sphinx. Anyway, the sphinx didn’t get much screentime or many other references, and I thought I’d give her a draw (: Some headcanon notes below

Mabaya, otherwise known as “The Sphinx,” is the last living of her kind… presumably. Sphinx’s just started disappearing, and disappearing, and fading away. And really, there was no plausible explanation for it. The only other Sphinx Mabaya has met is her mother, who vanished only a few years into her life. Perhaps the Sphinx’s are used in other temples, other pyramids and other castles, guarding the mysterious secrets the world has to offer.
Mabaya was trained at a young age to guard her pyramid. Sphinx’s are extremely intelligent, smart enough to beat a thousand-year-old alicorn in a battle of wits. She holds a lifetime of riddles in her ancient mind, and is probably a few millennia old. Much, much older than the Chaos Lord Discord. Sphinx’s are also known for their pride. They’re incredibly, frustratingly stubborn. Mabaya’s only chance of freedom was if someone solved her riddle- an impossible feat. She’d never let anyone best her, which was clearly an issue- she basically trapped herself, to the satisfaction of her captors. When someone did solve her riddle, centuries later, she was outraged. Even though she’s now entitled to her freedom, and has long outlived her captors, Mabaya stays in solitude, guarding the pyramid for the rest of her lonely days.
Sphinx’s are huge, brute strength being one of their strong suits. Oh, and they can fly… and they have magic. And they’re immortal! Basically, they’re pretty much unstoppable. Just like the draconequus, ponykind started to fear the powerful creatures… Maybe there’s a reason they started disappearing.
Even though Sphinx’s are pretty, they’re not social beings. They don’t live in herds or travel together, and mothers abandon their babies at the ripe age of 10 months. Mabaya’s mother stuck with her a bit longer- the poor thing was frail and weak. Pathetic, really, according to the other Sphinx’s. Fathers aren’t present in their children’s lives, and tend to outlive females by many years.

I just named her Mabaya, maybe Maya for short? I dunno, I kinda like her. I modified a few colors in her design, but tried to keep it true to the original. Hope you like it! <3
