According to Fosgitt, he drew the marks, so he might've drawn them separately, then copied and pasted them on pony flanks, like many fanartists do.
 
And honestly a wisk can only be drawn very few ways, so I don't see why that's such a worse sin then this.


 
Honestly, for me this stands out worse. Scootaloo looks like a cardboard cutout.
