Based on what? What evidence do we have that dragonfire isn't potent enough for this when used with that intention?
If people want to get technical about it, melting a huge chunk of ice or even wrought iron in a couple of seconds isn't exactly something normal fire can do. The more the show went on, the more it showed Spike's fire wasn't as weak as people thought, when he actually puts his mind into it. What with later still using it to instantly beat a giant creature many times his size.

He used it against the Roc when he first got his wings.
It immediately made it run away when even Twilight's beams weren't doing much.
