Even a society with progressive views about gender equality tends to coddle its women, not saying that they are progressive since this has obviously always been a country with a strict matriarchy. It could very well be that the males in this world would have to fight for their suffrage. Of course this could also be due in part by the fact that we consider it unethical to murder mentally insane criminals whereas one that is arguably sane, inspite of the fact that most death row inmates tend to lack a high school education and can barely spell their own name, we’re less inclined to protect. You may have also noticed an increase in female incarceration in the last 20 years, we may be harder on the males usually because they tend to be genuinely more dangerous, but now women are acting like individuals and often caring for themselves, you’ll find that quite a few of them are making all the same mistakes that we are.

So why does she only get 40 years when BigMac got death row?

Equestria is an mostly vegetarian society, they’ve been known to consume dairy products and eggs from time, but they have no basis for meat production. There’s simply no procedure for such activities, if you want meat you have to kill it yourself.
