Not denying that (though I don’t think this particular short is in continuity anyways), nor am I saying I personally interpret it as a romantic gesture. All I’m saying is that anyone who didn’t think the shipppers would latch onto this doesn’t know shippers.
Not all children don’t understand it. When i was 5 or 6 I had a crush on a boy, I knew what romance was back then.
The fandom here isn’t handwaving lesbian subtext, they’re desperately searching for it.
He’s talking about the sizable portion of the fandom that insisted that Lyra & Bon Bon were just friends.
I think you might have temporarily forgotten what fandom you’re in if you think that the guys here will “look for any excuse to” handwave lesbian subtext.
Even if there is some romantic feelings there, we know that Pinkie’s future is to be married to Cheese Sandwich with a child.
Giving someone a card is one thing. Making one from scratch that has the two of you on it and is large enough for one of you to use as a blanket if you were so inclined is… a little different. Even if you don’t interpret it as a romantic gesture, you have to admit that it’s easy to interpret that way if one is so inclined.
look, i kno dudes will look for literally any excuse to handwave away gay subtext in anything ever, but “valentines isn’t romantic actually” and “children don’t know what romance is” are some seriously bottom of the barrel excuses
Valentine’s day is a weird holiday; children don’t really understand it or attribute any romantic significance to valentines. See @Background Pony #232F ‘s comment… and don’t forget the target audience of these shorts (toddlers).

“platonic love between friends” lmao
yea, love too give my platonic friends heart-shaped valentines cards, like every normal heterosexual does
Lez shipping is sort of the default since there aren’t that many male characters in Ponyville & if they did choose one they risked fan backlash like with Flash Sentry. Then again… Cheese pie was confirmed….
I’m just confused. It could be just be platonic love between friends which shippers naturally want to lean in their preferred direction & I don’t begrudge them for that. So long as they don’t take it too far.
yes
I think when I was in the First Grade or something, I just gave Valentine’s cards to everyone (both girls and boys) including my friends…
Looking back on it now, it was an odd thing to do. I guess I treated it like Halloween.
